Baby Hatched too early?

Hi everyone -

I went to make my daily check on my eggs today and found this little one all hatched out - not sure why it happened as we still have 2 months or so to go before they're ready - I can see it's almost fully developed.. anyone have any help as to why this would have happened?

I hope this doesn't happen again - very sad....

They're incubating at 73 degrees..... thanks for asking, forgot to post that!

Thought perhaps temps were too high.. but that doesnt seem to be the case.

Did you add water or mist recently? I know it's been very hot here maybe a temperature spike gave it an early signal.

Good question - I did water / mist the hatchrite just a few days prior.....

Thats what I thought don't do that. You sent them a rain season signal that's when they hatch in the wild. Your better off letting it stay dry when it's that close to 9 months. Live and learn thats what I say.

You could after 9 months they should be developed by then. It all depends how far along they are. It looks like another couple month of development is needed.

It didn't, when I looked at it it was just open (as you see in the picture) it's really strange - all of the other eggs look good and are still viable... so I just hope it was a "freak accident".....

LOL - You're right, I should have put a WARNING on there - I just figured most people here have seen something like that - I guess that's what I get for assuming!...... I hope I haven't upset anyone...

I wouldn't say that egg has "hatched", but rather popped. Too much moisture, a physical disturbance, sudden temperature or pressure change, something along those lines.

Now that makes a LOT of sense! Thank you- I will keep a closer eye on all of the possible fluctuations!

In the past, we have taken egg boxes from the incubator into my air conditioned office to have a look. POP POP POP (x12). Destruction.

Those were Ackie monitor eggs, small like leopard gecko eggs, and it was the sudden change in temperature between the egg box and the cooler room.

It isn't the change in temp itself, but sudden expansion that the temp change causes.

Larger eggs, like Ball pythons, are better at dealing with that, as they have much more room to expand and contract.

But for small species eggs, it can be disaster.
