Baby veiled cham has very bad RI.

I got my fiancé a baby veiled (male) and when we got home we learned that he has a respiratory infection! When he opens his mouth, it is just FULL of mucus. His nostrils are also inflamed. He is extremely young, probably only one or two months old. all four of his legs and his tail and his head rest comfortably on one of his thumbs. We have the temps in his case varying from 95 to 80. (95 in just like one spot if he wants it)

Help? I know you *should* just return him since you bought him with an issue, but he picked him out over like 5 others in the tank (despite my advice saying the others looked healthier) and instantly bonded with him. He refuses to replace him.

You need to get him to a reptile vet ASAP for proper meds. Without the meds he will only get worse and will probably die. I hope that he gets treatment on time, it's horrible to loose a little friend!

My little Panther girl also has an RI.

What kind of cage is he in? If it is glass you should change that as soon as possible. I had my girl in one and the vet told me to change it. The glass does not allow proper air flow and can lead to RI quickly and can make it difficult to treat.

1st thing you should do is take him to an experienced Herp vet. He needs antibiotics ASAP. I have to take mine in every 3 days for an injection.

First, you should fill out the ask for help sticky with all the information about your cage and cham. It will help us give you advice about your husbandry.

As stated, a vet visit is much needed. Since the animal is so young time is a big factor.

Also your temps seem very high for such a small animal. Your ambient temps (temp in room and at bottom of cage should be around 70 degrees. Your basking temperature (the heat light) should be between 83-85 degrees. 90 is much too hot.

Im assuming you bought this animal at a chain store. It really dismays me how young they sell them. A 1 month old chameleon is too young for such transitions, in my opinion.

This animal needs immediate medical care. Plain and simple.

With him being that small glass is fine, its better. It keeps in heat and humidity, take out the heat bulb asap. It only needs to be around 76-79. No soil just paper towels. And he/she sounds about 3 weeks old.

Veil and panther baby temps are recommended to be at 74°f. I keep them at that temp with a small area that is heated to about 77.9-78.4°f. They will dehydrate and overheat within a very short time. Main thing with the babies: keep hydrated. Keep hydrated. Keep hydrated. I have noticed a marked response from both kinds upon the moving to their screen enclosures. I admit, the first month i keep them in the 10g critter cages (glass), but as of one month they go straight to the 16x16x20" reptibreezes. I only use the glass enclosures to keep the hydei from escaping so easily. Good luck with ri. I hear it is not fun, for pet owner or cham.

Thanks so much guys

Ok so... He is in a size medium reptibreeze. He was purchased from petco. I know, its bad... but like I said, jason had a weird viby thing going on with him and wanted ONLY him. Also, I bought pascal from Petsmart and he is about to celebrate his first birthday! (cricket and worm cake lol!)

I can get him a less intense bulb. Its just other advice said raising the temps would help with the RI. But i trust you guys more. Also, he is SOOOO tiny, I'm afraid the vet would over dose him!

And wouldn't humidity make it worse?
