Bed-time & itchy eye

Wat up my peeps :D
I'm new to the forums and i got my baby veiled chameleon a week and a half ago....everything had been going well until last night he fell asleep 30 mins earlier then most days and i thought nuthin of it but in the morning wen i turned on his lights he woke up and started to rub his eye against a vine and he's shedding so i thought he was just scraping off the skin but when i got home he was asleep & one eye was sunk-in and the other looked swollen :eek:.... i fed him and he ate half of what he usually eats and i misted him so it could help the shedding and his eye fixed.... but now that he fell asleep again when i look at him both if him eyes sink-in and come back to normal every few seconds like hes in pain...and i was just wondering if anyone knew what i should do...:confused:

If you take a little time and fill out the following, the senior members will have an easier time helping you help your little buddy get better.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage construction (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and type of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Location - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.
Current Problem - The current problem that you are concerned about.

Cage Info: 24x24x24
Cage Type - All Screen
Lighting - UVa/UVB and Basking both are on for 12 hours
Temperature - the top is 95 the lowpart is 85.... Lowest overnight temp is digital termomiter
Humidity -80 %, misting, measure humidity with a gage
Plants - no just bought a Pothos and im cleaning it right now
Location - Where is your cage located in the corner of my room... Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas a vent but it is shut off... At what height is the top of the cage about 36" including the table

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Vieled, male, about 3-4 months. in my care for a week in a half
Handling - handeled him once to clean the cage
Feeding - about 12 crickets a day... schedule:6 around 8:30, another 6 around 4:30, gut-loading them with Flukers Orange 3
Supplements - i dust the crickets 2x a week with Repti-Cal and Hepative
Watering -i water him with a driper and mist him 3x a day, yes i seen him drinking
Fecal Description - black and white, not to my knolage
History - Bought him at Pet-Co.
Current Problem - His eyes sunk-in and aper normal randomly, and he falls asleep during the day.....just wondering wat time do most of yalls chameleons go to sleep and what time do they wake up?

yes as long as they are in the shedding mode. Judging from their annoyed reactions, I believe shedding isn't fun. If i have to guess (since i am not a chameleon :D), it's probably very itchy.
 
What brand and type (linear/tube or compact) UVB bulb do you have?


Could you be clearer on your supplements please? (I don't expect that they are playing a part in the eye problem...just want to make sure of what you are doing/using.)

Eye problems can certainly be derived from inappropriate lightings.
If possible, please supply us the brand of the uvb you are using. Is it linear tube type or compact tube type?

for baby, you might need to lower the ambient temp to 70 - 80F.
I never go above 90F basking point as well. It is plenty hotttt for them.
What is the night temp you say?

Humidity -80 %, misting, measure humidity with a gage
What is the normal humidity without misting?

I follow sun schedule. Sunrise lights on, Sunset lights off.

i bought a compact beacause they only had that type but i going to buy a linear tube tomarrow ....

for the supplements i use Rep-Cal: (Herptive with Beta Carotene) & (Calcium with Vitamin D Phosphorous- Free) I put One tea spoon of each in a plastic bag and shake it with the crickets

make sure you change it to reptiSUN 5.0 UVB linear tube.
Actually, your chameleon might be better off without that compact tube on for a day or two. Just get the linear asap.

Considering that you might bought it at Petco, they probably going to try to convince you that compact is ok (which is NOT) and reptiglo is basically the same as reptiSUN (which is NOT). That is why i am giving you the warning.

I recommend the ReptiSUN 5.0 uvb linear tube (i provide you the image already).
Petco will charge you ridiculously excessive amount for them.
Or you can simply buy it online at www.lllreptile.com for internet special price 13 bucks.

as far as supplements goes:
you need 3 kind:
Herptivite
Repcal WITH D3
and Repcal WITHOUT D3 (I used MinerAll 0 for this instead of repcal.. you don't have to get it if you already have Repcal w/o D3)

umm... i just usually follow the sun to get it as close as possible to the nature.
Does it matter? idk for sure. But, i am speculating that it is.
I found out that my chameleons are smarter than they look and tend to "know" about the outside light cycle.

In the winter, they sleep earlier regardless of the indoor lighting when the sun already set.

a bit too blury to tell.
But, if you are worried about how flat the turret looked like, I think it's quite normal (provided that you are taking the picture when he was asleep at NIGHTIME).
my Veiled do tend to shrink its turret during his sleeping.

But, if that is how the eye looked like during the day and if he's sleeping too early in the day and seems lethargic, we got a problem.

No he was still awake only his right eye was open that one was closed andit looks like hes trying to blink but its closed

ok. turn off that compact UVB.
and get the linear tube asap. buy a fixture for it as well (if the fixture has some kind of plastic cover, take it off. UVB cannot pass plastic or glass).
See if the eye gets better.
