Ben's Home

Whoops...hopefully he does turn out to be male, but at least you do know how to handle the egg laying issue...

I just checked and I believe you are right. When we got him, I was told he was male and he was so sickly that he was bony and I thought he had them..Great..:( Now Im all scared again because of what happened with Betty..Ugh..

No worries about her being female! She looks healthy enough! Just place a pot of playsand or organic soil about 10 inches deep by 10 inches around-in the case she needs to lay an infertile clutch of eggs at some point. She should do fine-you have her all set up right now!

Don't be female veileds aren't rocket science though my first cham was a female back in the early nineties,Of course she died from being egg bound .Back then i didn't even have internet much less chameleon forums.I thought how could she have eggs she never even saw a male. You guys that are just getting into the hobby are very lucky to have this site its the best by far!Just provide her a small bucket with about 8 inches of moist white playsand and she will be fine as long as you give her the proper care see nothing to woorry about.

Hey Juli,

Do I need to keep an egg laying bin in my Brody's cage all the time? I am still kinda confused on how the whole egg laying thing works and I guess I am paranoid that I might not notice when she needs it. Sorry to hijack the thread.TIA!

Ugh..does anyone know at what age that might start? Like I said, I was told HE was a 3 year old MALE when I bought him from the crazy closet people...

I keep a laying bin in all of my females cages-it is so much better to be safe then sorry. In fact I have both a Veiled and a Nosy digging this week with infertiles. I use a plastic flower pot 10" deep and 10" wide with either a mix of coconut fiber and sand, or sifted orgainc soil. In fact in 16X16X30 cages I place the pot in, then a plant stand over it, and put a Pothos in the plant stand so there is no excuse for their not being enough room. I am not an advocate of removing females to another container to lay eggs.

I was under the impression that they start around a year. He/she is definitely not three years. I cant give you a real estimate but my girl is about 6-9 months and she is around his size. :) Hope that helps some.

I dont follow the plant stand thing? So you put a pot ont he ground and then the plant stand OVER it with a plant in it? Im confused..:(

Ben was climbing down yesterday as you can see from that pic I snapped..which was weird because ben never goes tot he bottom but I didnt see any digging (we still have the substrate in and plan on removing it today) Ill use the plastic pot idea, got those around!

WOW! Thanks so much Juli. I definitely dont want to be transfering her back and forth when she needs to lay. I will go out and get what she needs today and keep it in her enclosure.

How do you keep the sand moist so it doesnt collapse on her when she is digging if you leave the laying bin in her enclosure all the time? Thanks so much.

Heya BlackBetty,
nice looking veiled you have.
Everybody have offered you excellent advise.

I don't want you to worry too much of what i am going to say.
This is just a precaution.
It could be me staring at computer screen for too long and start nit picking on minute detail.

For a while, do keep extra attention to her diet and her lighting need.
I am sure that it is nothing much. But, i do not like the fact that her pelvic bone is too apparent in some of the pics and the kink on her left heel.

If you got a chance, bring her to exotic vet for check up and have her fecal tested (float test) for assurance.

All the best for you and your chameleon.

What do you think is going on? Like I said, she (I guess!?) lived in a closet and I was told she was -3- years old!!! yet she is smaller than betty was who was only 1 year...We don't have an exotic vet around here and I dont travel to Nashville much but if you feel there is something worrysome, I can see what I can do.

Alright, I removed the substrate. Put in 2 pothos and a taller plant that she loves to hang out on (dont know name). Also put in a laying bin. She eyed it and moved past it. She seems to be happy..Im very pleased but I think Im going to have to go up in size on my setup.. the top of the new plants touched the top and bends the plants. I also have Schlefflera that I want to put in there but is too tall. is a 71" too much? I have a reptarium in that size until the hubby can build one like he wants to...

Thats 6FT Mate, nothing wrong with large cages, think how big it would have in the wild!!! My male will have a 4x4x2 to himself soon, deciding on weather or not to bother with a female.
