So I just found out Im going to Hawaii for my Birthday and i was wondering if anyone knows of any Chameleon breeders in Hawaii? Also If i where to find one would i be able to bring it back to texas with me?

prolly not they would brobably have a holding period in customs wich would be alright for a dog or cat but chams as u prolly know are very sensetive any they would not be able to properly sustain them but thats just my guess who knows

You don't need a breeder in Hawaii :).
Just consult the nearest tree for some jacksonii.

Take some photos and post please.

lol!! I read that earlier today!! BUT i was thinking it would be neat to see the chams in Hawaii.....You know how they look diffrent everywhere......You would think I owuld be concerned about EVERYTHING BUT chameleons since im going to freaking HAWAII!!!!!!!!! but i have gone cham crazy and that is the very first thing that popped into my head

I go to Hawaii at least twice a year (two different islands per trip). I don't think I have seen any wild chams in all my visits.

ha the nearest tree you will find a chameleon.. I don't think so.. they are probably up in the mountains somewhere I wouldn't say they are easy to find. But what do I know i've only been to hawaii twice and while I was hiking I myself were looking for them. no luck...

awwwwwwww man.......Thats depressing:eek::confused::(

Well......Im going to be doing this hike thing in the mountains so maybe Ill see one......hopefully...

Which island are you going to? You can get a permit at the court house to bring home jacksons legally, or at least that is what I have been told. Before I went to Hawaii I would write of call and verify that information. I know from my last visit that you can purchase jacksons dirt cheap. How soon are you heading over? Which birthday is coming up? As long as you have a suffient time window you should be able to get information. You might start by going online to Hawaii state laws.

Juat my 3 cents worth (inflation)

Its for my 21!!! yeaaaaaaaaaaaa Im actually not going till august so i have LOTS of time to check everything out!!

Oh and Im going to Oahu(spelling)

I didn't see any chams when I was on the Big Island (though they're there), but saw some wonderful geckos and anoles - the gold dust day geckos (try saying that three times fast) would come up to the hotel balcony and pop in and out of the rooms.

you have to get a permit, and make sure that your airline will actually accept the cham. My bf and I are going in June, and hes done a bunch of research, made alot of calls, sadly we can get the permit, and max of 2 chams but american airlines will not let you have them as carry on, and you cannot ship them out. sucks for us.

Quote pulled from Hawaii Department of Land and Natural resources- Application for permit must be submitted 90 days prior-

Any person wanting to export a chameleon from Hawaii must obtain an export permit from the Division of Forestry and Wildlife at (808) 587-0166 on Oahu only. We will need your photo identification card. Whether you catch it yourself or purchase it you still need an export permit. The maximum number you can export is four, and you may only do so one time. You may not export chameleons for commercial purposes.

Jackson’s Chameleons are an endangered species in their native range. Therefore, to export a chameleon to another country, you must also obtain a Cites permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Call (808) 861-8525.

Other important information you should know:
1. Before obtaining a chameleon to export, we recommend you check with your airline to see if it will accept it on their aircraft.
2. Chameleons may not be taken from island to island in Hawaii.
3. For all other questions please call the Division of Forestry and Wildlife at (808) 587-0166.

hmmmmmm i will have to check and see which airline we are using....

Jackson's were also not native, though well established now. That is why you are not allowed to move chameleons from island to island as stated in my first post.

Big Island Chameleons

Alaho, I have Chameleons in my yard on the Big Island. I live up in Kamuela. I say up because of the elevation. his area is also called the wet side of Kamuela because of all the rain. Anyway If your in this area I can show you where to find them. Mostly in the trees arouns anyones property up here. I feed them Mealworms by hand and gained their trust. Pretty Kool.
