Breeding Dubias or Crix in a SMALL Apartment

Wow, this is a really good thread!! Thanks for all the info guys. So Dubai's can be used as a daily staple?

Yup thats what I did. I am poor too lol. I bought 150 adult females and 25 adult males from a forum member less than 2 weeks ago and there are already new roaches running around in the container. I just put half an orange in there every other day or so it is nothing but rind.

My container is an 80qt rubbermaid that I cut into and glued and duck taped screen up top for ventilation. The lid locks for peace of mind even though these guys can't climb the walls at all. The only problem I have had so far have come from the small ones attempting to climb up the walls and fall on their backs and being unable to flip over they die. I bought an under tank heater on e-bay for $30 and put it under their egg crates to keep them all warm. There are 5 egg crates inside stacked vertically that the roaches always hang out in. I was worried about cleaning at first but honestly 99% of them are always in the egg crates, it's so easy. They eat anything. I got about a pound of small red hot (very very hot actually, I love them) from a friends garden and I cant eat all them, I gotta spare my intestines for they are the weak link in this fling anyways the roaches ate them too!

I was pretty hesitant to start this myself but I am glad I have. It will save me money in the end. I was nervous about handling roaches but you get over that pretty quick, they too have a crazy strong grip and all their feet moving up your arm haha but you get used to it, yet they can't even climb up the walls of their prison. Samson loves them so I have to hand feed them to him otherwise the roaches all go down and find some dark spot and never get eaten.

Just do it!!

How often does a female reproduce? And what do I do with adults too large to feed off but that I do not want to breed?

Females give live birth...she reproduce maybe like 20 to 40 or 30sumthing like that...I would just the adults for breeding..that's my opinion

The adults aren't really too large to feed off to panthers or veileds. My Jackson's isn't too thrilled with the big roaches, but everyone else will eat them. But if you don't want some adults to breed, then you could sell them or give them away.

Sorry for the crappy pics. Not much light in my room and my Captivate doesn't have flash. Super simple setup: Undertank heater taped to the side of the bin that's plugged into a lamp dimmer from Home Depot. Cloth (the kind vendors use when they ship a reptile) that's been cut into circles and hot glued to the lid and a bunch of egg crates. Voila!

Im just getting ready to purchase the supplies - just a normal heating pad from the drug store on a low setting should work correct? And for a small colony ... containers in the 5-10 gallon range?
