Bulk Cricket Purchasing

I am going to be putting in my first bulk cricket order this afternoon. I think I am going to use Rainbow, however I am a little hesitant because I have heard that several members have found deadly insects in their purchases (black widows). What place do you buy your crickets from? *This question is directed at those who buy from bug breeders online*

Cush, you are in San Diego.
Why not mulberryfarms?

I recommend one of our site sponsors. If not there, then do some research at fauna.

I use mulberry farms and I love them. I order all kinds of stuff from there and the bugs I order is what I get, no rattlesnakes, black widows etc. :) they rock at no DOA too!

Cush, crickets need warm temps. Oddly enough so do most of the dangerous bugs. No matter where you get them from, there will always be a possibility of surprises in your order. Unless you can find a vendor who inspects 100% of their orders.

Just make sure you're careful when unpacking them, and inspect them yourself. Treat them like they are all poisonous, as you look through the cartons.

I think eBugCo's are the prettiest crickets I've seen (good call Chad). They are in a cooler climate, and heat the building(s) the crickets are in, so they are not in an area that I think black widows are native to. They pack them much better than anyone else, which is why they show up pretty. No fuzzy weevel worms either, beetles, etc - just crickets. Not sure on prices, I think they're a little on the higher end, but it's worth it to have almost none dead on arrival with nice healthy crickets.

I swear by Ghanns. If you join their breeder program the prices are cheaper than anyone else around. I never get dead crickets, summer or winter (I live in Montana 100 to -20). I also have never had anything in my crickets. Give them a call at (800) 476-2248. They are the only ones who can get me live crickets in the winter.:)

Cush,

I know you asked about online ordering but if you are in the San Diego area, then you should definetely try Mulberry Farms or even LLL, LLL will order the amount and size for you and when they come in you can pick them up from the store. We switch between Mulberry and LLL but often buy from LLL since they are down the street and it is easy to get them. Not sure on your location but thought I would mention it.

So what kind of specials do they have? and what kind of bulk buys do they offer?

The only problem with this is that eventually, as rare as it is, they will have to inevitably order some stock from other suppliers. So the risk is still much much less than a warm climate vendor, but there is still some level of risk. My point is, don't be fooled into a false sense of security just because you are dealing with a cooler climate vendor. :)

Here we dont have large scale commercial insect venders from whom you can buy bulk, the only commercial vendor really is a company called piscies who do chinese container tubs for petshops.
Mostly we rely on private breeders, usually other herpers, and when you find a good one, you stick to him/her.
I buy bulk from a guy who makes up your order on the spot (pickup) so the crickets are always alive, fresh and havent been sitting in the bag for any length of time.
Since bulk orders here are generally sold in calico/snake bags, thats important (ventilation/less mortality). A stack of eggcrates held together with elastic bands is added to the empty bag then the crickets go in with fresh carrot and greens.

Never had any odd bugs or anything in mine, good thing too, hate to get a narky funnelweb! :)

does ebugco actually sell to individual? I went to ebugco.com. Seems like they only sell their products to stores.
