Cage build 2

I built a second cage... 2x2x3 for Lily.

Bit of a different design. instead of the door opening like a regular door. it swings up. like opening the hood of a car.

Once the stain finishes drying, im going to staple the screen to the inside, and set up an eye hook to the door so that it can stay open when i need it to.

return tomorrow evening for more photos!!!

Thanks!
I think that the door will work very well. it already swings, ahd has a latch that hold its shut.

Did you use 1x2 wood? I was looking all over HD and Lowes today and could not find any nice quality 2x2 which I've seen others use. So I got 1x2 oak. I'm going for a larger enclosure though but I think it'll still be alright with proper bracing.

I used 1x2x8 select pine for this.

I also made a 2x2x4 cage for my male veiled.

I found that as long as you put the angle pieces in the corners.. its very sturdy. no rocking.

it would be cool if you added bendable arms from a metal chair to the door so it stays in a locked position, or even a pencil sized wood piece and 2 holes and it just fits in the hole and fits in the door to keep it up

when it's finished please give me a price then I can see if its worth making another

Yeah I was shooting for something like 24x36x48. I think I might need something a bit thicker possibly? I don't know. I wonder if the braces would be enough at that size. Wood selection at HD and Lowes kind of sucks when it comes to non construction grade lumber.

Im adding an eye hook to keep the door open. :D
and the wood cost about 40 bucks total.

i think if you add braces to all four corners, it should be ok.
keep in mind, that its a huge flipping cage. and i wouldnt want to do anytthing thicker than 1x2. JMO
I like the idea of the door swinging up

the new cage!!! screened!

It looks good! I like the door too, you'll just have to be sure your cham is not near the top when opened up:p What color stain is that?!?!?

Its a very nice color! I have been playing around with the "colored" stains a bit lately, lets just say I am not a fan of them lol.
Good thinking on the basking site :p

what colored stains?????

I need to add another basking light to give her a better ambient/gradient temp. and add some more light to cage.

need some grow lights. badly. before my plants die.

but the cage is a good size for her, i put one scheffelara in on the ground, and a pothos hanging from the top, and she has her lay bucket. already ate her dinner yesterday in the cage. so thankfully, she seems to like it.

The colored stains are made by Minwax i believe, they come in blue, green, yellow, red, grey and a few other colors i believe. I keep getting areas where the color is MUCH darker compared to the rest of the areas stained. Everything was well sanded and cleaned prior to so im not sure what the issue is.

I do use daylight bulbs(6500k) in my set ups. Various brands, but they help with plant growth tremendously imo especially if you have light "needy" plants like Hibiscus.

hmm maybe ill try it, see what i can come up with. colored stains seems cool...

how big are your daylight bulbs? what fixture do you have them in?

I use daylight bulbs in 48" T5ho, 24" T8, 18"T8, and cfl sizes. The T5HO seems to put out much more light compared to the others, but is also twice the length of the others i use so it is hard to give and accurate comparison. The new LED lghts seem to be pretty good, i know a few.members use them but im waiting on a "review" before i try them though
