Cage Build (Display Case Conversion)

So after having a few threads and a deal turned sour with a custom cage builder, I have finally found something I can use as a base to build my own custom cage! If all goes according to plan, I will be picking up a display case from a sports shop tomorrow night for under $150. The overall dimensions are 73" tall, 29" wide, 19" deep, with the actual display piece being about 45" tall, 28" wide, 18" deep (there's a bit of a lip on the base/stand). The display piece is completely made of plexiglass.

This is essentially the exact same dimensions I requested for my custom cage (only 3 inches shorter and 3 inches narrower) and this costs about $450 less!

The top seems to be lit up so removing whatever is there, putting my own fixtures in, and putting a screen cover under it so he cant get at it shouldn't be too difficult. From there, I'm going to either drill some holes in the sides and offset another piece of plexi with a screen mesh to create a sort of chimney (think protean cage, but one on each side), or i'll just do a similar sort of design to the protean in the front by cutting out some of the door and having a second layer inside. I have yet to decide which route to go with.

Once both of those steps are completed, I plan on getting the zoo med cork tile background to finish off the look (and give him something to climb on), as well as getting a few more live plants, vines, etc.

If I missed anything, let me know. The first of the pictures will come tomorrow when I pick up the display case :)

by the way, this is for my panther. he's a bit of a runt though, being only about 5.5 inches in length from snout to vent. he's 11 months old. i believe the size will be just perfect for him

also, since I haven't posted in a little while, here's 2 pictures i took a few weeks ago of Buddy trying to be a rock star...

mine goes there on his own. about 3/4 of the time when he's free ranging, he's climbing all over my guitars and amps. the other 1/4 of the time he's walking around me on the couch/sitting in my lap (or on my head)

okay, so here it is. I picked up this anon goggles display case for only $150!! The front door has a bit of a crack in the bottom corner so I will probably need to replace that piece, but still. I think I did pretty well here.

Dude! That looks pretty sweet! Will you be leaving the exterior "as-is"?

I haven't decided yet. The right side has some fairly big scratches on it, which is completely visible and open to the room... I think I want to leave it as is for now and if it bothers me, I'll repaint it. Its just a metal frame, so even if I want to redo it in the future, it should only take a day or so.

When I was a kid my dad Had a huge SO-BE drink refrigerator. The kind you see at liquor stores. He told him he'd fix it up and make a chameleon enclosure out of it...12 years later that never happened lol. But seeing this reminds me of what he wanted to do.

I think it would be a great idea with what you have...I'd def look into it more and figure out how you can get it to work as an enclosure!

That looks like a perfect base! I Love the outside, Id do it in a game or tv room maybe! Here is the project I started last weekend. Will be interested in how you get everything functional fro a happy healthy cam while maintaining the aesthetics! Love the creativity!!
