So after having a few threads and a deal turned sour with a custom cage builder, I have finally found something I can use as a base to build my own custom cage! If all goes according to plan, I will be picking up a display case from a sports shop tomorrow night for under $150. The overall dimensions are 73" tall, 29" wide, 19" deep, with the actual display piece being about 45" tall, 28" wide, 18" deep (there's a bit of a lip on the base/stand). The display piece is completely made of plexiglass.
This is essentially the exact same dimensions I requested for my custom cage (only 3 inches shorter and 3 inches narrower) and this costs about $450 less!
The top seems to be lit up so removing whatever is there, putting my own fixtures in, and putting a screen cover under it so he cant get at it shouldn't be too difficult. From there, I'm going to either drill some holes in the sides and offset another piece of plexi with a screen mesh to create a sort of chimney (think protean cage, but one on each side), or i'll just do a similar sort of design to the protean in the front by cutting out some of the door and having a second layer inside. I have yet to decide which route to go with.
Once both of those steps are completed, I plan on getting the zoo med cork tile background to finish off the look (and give him something to climb on), as well as getting a few more live plants, vines, etc.
If I missed anything, let me know. The first of the pictures will come tomorrow when I pick up the display case
by the way, this is for my panther. he's a bit of a runt though, being only about 5.5 inches in length from snout to vent. he's 11 months old. i believe the size will be just perfect for him
