Hi I'm a new member and I apologize firstly for using this forum as one of my own but they want let me post and actually need help soon as possible. Or just answers that would be helpful I just got a veiled chameleon baby 3 days ago, I built a cage out of my old book show case and I lined the places that used to be windows with screening because i read that they love a lot of air and I think it's great for him. but aside all that I don't know what size my cage is but it's pretty big for a little guy like him,I'm pretty scared and I want everything to work and I just don't know what to do about this situation that I'm in.. He's not eating like... For 3 days he's not eating.. I don't know if it's because he's in a new place or its that I don't have it hot enough in his cage or whatever it may be! I have a 100w light since the cage is so big and I don't know if that's the best thing for him, I tried to feed him with crickets but when I hold the cup up to him all he does is look at me and not the food I just want him to eat and be healthy and grow to be strong! But all he does is hide up in the corner of the cage away from the light , I'm really scared and I just want him to be safe and I know I jumped all over the place but I'm panicing!

It's ok. Your cage is perfectly fine it's a really big and nice looking setup! Your chameleon will be really happy with that setup!

IMHO I feel these enclosures, as awesome as they are, are to large for juvi's. They should be in much smaller enclosures until at least the age of 12 months. Smaller enclosure (18x18x36 kind of a thing) will give the younguns the ability to catch free roaming feeders, and give you the ability to monitor them a lot closer.

3 days for a new chameleon of not eating isn't that far from normal. Nor is the fact of its comfort level to not let you hand feed it (even out of the cup). Give um time to calm down and relax. It took almost 6 months for my current male to warm up to me to take a cricket out of my fingers. You absolutely need to KNOW what the basking temps are. Guessing will not give you the success that your cham deserves. Get a temp gun ASAP, and use it on their back when they're under the basking light. Read the care sheets available here to verify where those basking temps should be for your veiled. I use inline manual dimmers to adjust my basking lights so their temps are right where they should be. I'm also a huge fan of "cup feeding". It helps me KNOW pretty for sure what they're eating and how much. Even though a few will always get out and free range, the majority of them are always right there for the taking. There are lots of great creative ideas that lots of members have posted on custom feeders. Me included.

Smaller cage and more time to get used to the new environment , sounds like a plan!

@ChameleonZeus - I am raising babies and this is the feeder cup I used. It is just a small ziplock square container held in place on the side of the glass enclosure by a pair of strong magnets. The pieces of fruit keep the feeders in the cup until the young chameleon is ready to snatch them up. Position the cup near your chameleon's favorite spot and put it under a branch so he can look down into the cup. Good luck!

See melble68's post below. I have bolded and underlined the answer to your question, "Why would I?"
