Cham lost outside in NY

We put our 7-mo. old male panther chameleon out on his tree for some sun. We were outside as well, but weren't watching him as closely as we normally do (I know, stupid move). The tree is about 12 feet high and at least 10-15 feet from any other trees or tree branches. It's mowed lawn between his tree and the other trees. We've only brought him out a few times, but he's never left the tree before. And in his cage and free range room he's never touched the floor. It did start getting a little windier and colder out, so we walked over to the tree to bring him in and he was gone. I know hawks are a possibility, but if not, would he have climbed down the tree, walked 10-15 feet to the nearest trees and brush and climbed around there? I just thought he would never walk on the ground if he had a tree to stay in. He normally goes to bed around 6:30, so we are going to continue searching the rest of this evening.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

That must be so stressful. :(

he might have switched trees.. especially if you guys weren't paying attention to him long enough to give him time to do so.

I really hope you find him!

My guess is he's in his tree and just a great job of hiding from you. Is there a way you can put his cage outside and fix it so a branch of the tree leads to the cage? It's possible he might decide he likes the comforts of home.

They will walk. But mostly likely he's right in plain sight blend-ing in. I have quite a time just trying to find my Parson's in a 7x 7x 7 well planted space.

I am so sorry you lost your cham. My guess would be that he is still in "his" tree and you just can't see him. But absolutely he could have gone over to another tree. My cham actually prefers walking on the ground and low shrubbery while outside. He walks and walks and goes right by many tall trees. My guess is that he is looking for a female. And if you have a male, maybe that's just what he did. I hope you find him.

Once he settles to sleep he will brighten up and with a flash light shouldnt be to hard to find.. best of luck to you friend!

break out a nice high power flashlight or a Qbeam portable spotlight an when its dark look everywhere whit said lights he will stand out an youll see him.

Stay calm he's in the tree you have to go get him. If you don't find him by nightfall you can see them with a good flashlight at night they glow. Where do you live? Can you climb a ladder? I just saw where you live to far for me to drive to help you.

I am so sorry you can't find your Cham. I hope you can find him once he settles in to sleep if he is still hiding in the tree. My boys used to never go to the floor.... but now I can't leave my eyes off them as they go to the bottom to investigate things all the time now. Wishing you the best of luck tonight.

Unfortunately the exact same thing happened to me one time with a nosy be. His usual tree, never moved, the phone rang and 5 minutes later he was gone.

The neighbors helped me search high and low into the evening and with flashlights but he was nowhere to be found. And the tree that he was in was only about 9 feet high so he had definitely climbed down and walked away.

About three months later however the neighbors kid actually spotted him at the top of a palm tree 3 blocks away about 40 to 50 feet in the air. the kid used to catch dragonflies for him all the time and he definitely knew that turquoise blue when he saw it. Luckily that was in Florida; however, New York may certainly have a different outcome.

Keep your eyes peeled! You just never know when he might be seen, and I would involve the neighbors if that is wise in your situation.

Thanks to everyone for their replies

We've gotten several neighbors involved in the search. No luck, yet, but he's usually asleep by now, so we are going to check again and then continue with flashlights later.

Thanks again for all of your kind thoughts and concern. We've learned a lesson we will not forget. Only hope our story has a happy ending.

Will keep you updated!

Thanks!

Marla

I second a night search with flashlights. That's probably the best way to find him soon. I would mention to your neighbors you are missing him and if you cannot find him at night he should eventually show up with the neighborhood looking for him.
