Chameleon is always black at his basking spot.

My chameleon always turns a grey-brown to black whenever he's basking. Is that because he isn't absorbing enough heat so he's changing into darker colors to increase how much heat is being absorbed? Another theory would be his basking spot temperature isn't high enough? It's at 80.1 usually (note he is a juvenile), should I raise his normal basking spot branch a little higher?

I'd raise the tempature a couple degrees, from your picture I assume it is a veiled, and they like 83 to 85 give a couple degrees as a juvenile for basking.

Okay I'll raise the temperature a couple. Follow up questions what about his food he is a new chameleon so are there any ways I can get him to recognize his food dish?

Sorry I am not sure about that, as I currently am getting my chameleon this Sunday. You can check out the Veiled chameleon care sheet on here that will help you a lot https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/caresheets/veiled/ That is were I found the temp thing.
