Chameleon wears emotions on skin

Panther chameleon Peatree's tie-dyed body is a little like a reptile mood ring that only has three colors: mad, territorial and "I'm in my cage" happy.

Graduate student Paul Wilkes poses for a picture with his pet panther chameleon, Peatree. Wilkes says that he can tell Peatree's mood by his color changes

But, for owner Paul Wilkes, his beauty and grace make up for the unfriendliness, especially towards stuffed Victoria's Secret dogs.

"You see, the dog is a bright color, so that will kind of trigger his color change because he thinks it's another male chameleon in his area," Wiles said.

"When he is mad he will turn a little darker colors, but if he is defensive or scared, he will puff up his throat and turn much brighter."

According to Wilkes, its a common misconception that chameleons change colors in order to blend into their background and hide. It is more based on their moods and how visible or intimidating they want to appear.

"He is always scanning and darting his eyes around for aerial predators, so when my hand comes at him from above he will puff up his throat to look bigger and open his mouth, but he usually never bites," he said. "He does have some serious teeth in there that, if he wanted to get a good bite in, could make you need some stitches."

However, it is difficult to imagine Peatree moving fast enough to chomp down on a finger. According to Wilkes, his full-speed motion is about an inch every 3 to 4 seconds.

"He isn't like a dog so he doesn't do tricks or respond to his name, but I think it is more about the challenge of taking care of reptiles that draws me in. And they are beautiful."

Jo the info was insteresting, even if not new. But hey I thought we finally saw a pic of you until I read the thing. Forever the mystery man.:p

Very interesting, especially the pic of you MMMmmmmm....nice... soz I meant Peatree of course lol

Hey that's me!! I don't post on here much... I MUST elaborate on the interview that got that article published...... The reporter misinterpreted a few things....
First off, she was scared to death of crickets! I had to show her speed of the tongue, but since I was holding a live cricket she was too freaked out to watch the chameleon.
Then she began quizzing me...
"What tricks does he do?"
"What does he do?"
"Why do you like him?"

Well, I told her that he doesn't do tricks and that he just looks pretty and you can't hold him often. To which she replied "So, kind of like a trophy wife?" Which really caught me off guard...but was pretty funny.Anyway the Victoria Secret stuffed dog has bright pink polka dots and happens to be the arch nemesis of Peatree, which is when I explained that color change and puffing up were more a function of "mood" than blending in with the surroundings as everyone likes to think. Which is were the "wilkes can interpret his moods" thing came in. All in all, it was a very interesting experience and I am glad it got published... I wish I had mentioned the bill going the the house in April, but I was too nervous for that. Their picture doesn't do the guy justice either, here is a better photo.

How about a link to the full atricile? Most of us don't get to see things by other forum people except the big guys.:)

Unfortunately I think that is the full article. The university of GA has been running articles about students interesting pets in their university paper. I am a graduate student at UGA and my office mates have to listen to me talk about my chameleon and other reptiles day in and day out. When they started running the article someone recommended they do something on my chameleon. I was pretty excited to see my pic on the forum though... I view the forum daily but rarely post. It seems I don't often have husbandry problems but don't feel the need to post assistance to others when there are individuals on the forum with much more cham experience than me. Thanks for the interest though!
