I have a 2.5 yr old chameleon. We went on vacation for a week and came back and his tail look like it was rotting away. we gave explicted directions on care for him so not sure what happened. I took him to a vet and they chopped off the dead part of his tail. They said "Jackson" the chameleons name may of fell or something like that. So what I need to know is what changes I need to make to his cage in order to make him the most comfortable. His tail is only 1.5 or so shorter but im sure that is alot considering the part that he uses to climb is gone.

too bad about the tail. Maybe the pet sitter crushed it in the cage door?
regardless, they can do fine without parts of their tails - they learn.

I would think, based onother lizard species, that the tail will probably grow back.

Our little yapper dogs loce to catch the wild annoles in our yard here in FL, and now, we have a yard full of short tailed lizards. The tails all grow back soon.

The tail will not grow back, only some lizards have that privilege. He will eventually adapt to it, but I would recommend putting more walkways within his enclosure until he gets used to it. That way, if he loses his balance and falls, he will have more things that he can grab onto on the way down. Poor little guy!

After all I have read, I never knew that Chams would not grow their tails back.

I learn something new in here EVERYDAY!

yes you do and FYI their nails don't grow back if broken off too far down, or their spikes or their rostrals if they get damaged.
