Coccidia... Help and cleaning advice. Please..

Ok I got the 40 volume peroxide today. So happy it came early. I am going to rip everything apart to start cleaning. I think I am going to attempt Beman's drip tray first since I used the wet vac on it. Then move to everything that I know is contaminated with Bahari's cage.

Hi there thank you! I am doing a lot of what you have said to do. May I ask you a few additional questions?
The fecal came back with over 30 oocysts. The Vet said this was a lot. That is quite a bit.

I have no idea. But she is treating him with 2 doses of the ponazural 48 hours a part then doing it again in two weeks. Do you think this is right? That sounds right.

Today I completed the second dose of the first round of treatment. Also she is doing a fecal on him in 4 weeks and then two weeks after. Would that be correct? Correct

So the final fecal would be 4 weeks after the second round of treatment.

There is also the concern with my cham I had prior to getting this one. He had a clean fecal a month ago at his 1 year check up. She said that I need to wait 2 more weeks to get a real idea if he was contaminated. This would give a full month for the oocysts to show in the fecal. She said if it came back clear then he should be good but I worry a lot. So does this sound right to you? Correct. I would keep him quarantine until you have 3 clean fecals. Sometime a wild caught could be in quarantine for up to three or fours months. Because you need to wait so long in between.

You do all of the process until you get 3 clean fecals.. How far apart do you run the fecals?
Correct.. Fecal tests were run every three to four weeks.

Also I am unable to cup feed my new boy. He shows no interest in the cup. He will only eat if they are crawling on the branches.. Even then he is not eating much. Only 2-3 feeders at most every other day. I don't know if I should continue to let him eat off the branches or put them in the cup and hope he goes for them if he gets hungry enough. I have been trying to make sure he continues to eat so I have been letting him eat off the branches but I know this is more of a risk for contamination continuing. Is the infected chameleon under weight that you would be concerned if he didn’t eat? I would try the cup for a couple of feedings and see if he would go for it. And if he still doesn’t eat, place on the branch.

Thank you for all of that!!!!. I thought that was a very large load of coccidia according to what I was reading and the feedback from my vet.

So I basically have 3 months of this with him... Do I have to keep breaking everything down to clean every weekend once I get the first clean fecal? Should I get my other cham tested every 3-4 weeks as well while I am testing the sick one?

As far as his weight he is a year old and 96 grams at 14-15 inches long. My Vet seemed to think he was on the smaller side. But I have no experience with panthers. I know a veiled his length tip of nose to end of tail should be between 105-120grams. That was what I was told for that length of Veiled.

I would get them both tested personally, just to be safe. I'm not sure about breaking it all down like that, probably not. I'd keep the cage VERY simple and spot clean poop. Then I'd focus mainly on just the bottom and the branches(maybe just use dowel rods). Maybe even just put plants on the outside of the cage? He'll still feel secure. IME Panthers aren't too obsessed with having tons of cover anyway.

As for the cham, that does seem a little small... i would bet this guy had coccidia and the shipment made it worse. I wouldn't beat yourself up over it, unfortunately this kind of stuff happens. Glad you're getting so much help though. You have so many people giving great advice and support. You'll have this under control and be better from it. Wish you and your chams the best (y)

Yes, I am going to just get them both tested for a few months once I know the coccidia is gone. I don't want to risk thinking I got rid of it and then get smacked with it again by not getting the fecals tested for the next few months. My Vet charges $60 bucks per fecal :(

That is what my Vet is saying as well for his size and the coccidia. She said typically it is a stress incident that will trigger it to go crazy because the stress drops the immune system. That it can sit in low numbers not causing any major health issues. But she said that it can cause weight and size issues... But it is not something that stands out as being an issue until it starts taking over the chams body.

So we are just taking it day by day lol. I ended up pulling all real branches out as well. I used the jungle trees I had. They are more of a rubber surface and very easy to clean. Everything is attached to the screen sides with zip ties. So the ground is totally clear. I have papertowels on the floor so I can quickly remove urate and stool. Then spot clean and replace the paper towels. He has 3 fake plants that I have sitting higher in the cage. I just gotta get him cup feeding so I can lower the risk of recontaminating him.

I am very very thankful for all the help... I know this would have been so much worse without the support I am getting here.

You got this Becca! And just remember you're knowledge in this being involved first hand in it will go unmatched. After you're done dealing with this you will be our parasite expert and help so many people and so many chameleons after this is all said and done. Sucks it happened and happened to you of all people.... I'm a firm believer in the fact that God doesn't give us anymore than he thinks we can handle. Apparently he thought you were strong enough and your chams of course too. Don't get me wrong it is beyond crappy that this happened to you and your chams and I wish it didn't. Poor little Bahari must've had a bad shipping experience or something?!
