Coccidia... Help and cleaning advice. Please..

You can try making cloth hammocks but he may need a bin if he won't stay on them.
Just take triangles of cloth ant attach them at three points at different levels. It gives him more temperature choices that the bin but if he falls again go for the bin.
As for the appetite if he isn't getting his medicine because he's not eating that's one thing and you should call the vet and see about oral dosing. If he misses a meal or eating one day no so bad. The meds typically are rather fatty if they are made in an oil base.

He has been falling since I got him. Everyday off the screen and about 6 times now off his branches. his nails are super short not like Bemans. I am more worried about him breaking bones now then even eating. He got all his meds. So he is not missing those. I am hoping the silks will make him want to eat.

If he is falling like that I would do a bin... or if he is in a smaller reptibreeze, turn it sideways so it is only half the height... and then line some papertowels for padding and poo protection.

He may be climbing because he is scared - clarice spent her first month or two on the screen hiding behind a plant. She fell once or twice while hanging upside down, but she had plants at the bottom to cushion the fall.

Maybe cut up an old tshirt or pillow case you dont mind throwing away... and put a new cloth hammock in every time you clean.

aflatoxicosis killed a significant number of jajeanpierre's collection. I put the link up above

Yikes. Is it temporary toxicity? While the mold is in the system? Like if someone changed the food and didnt feed thr crickets for a week or two. I dont use dry gutload but thats not to say they have never seen mold. That would make me so paranoid!

Im so sorry you are both going through this. That photo breaks my heart.

I have never setup a hospital bin, but I love drilling holes in stuff! You could drill a small hole through the sides to allow you to place a low branch or two... so he can still perch and move around a little without the fall risk. I did this with an amazon box to pick the panthers up and it worked well.

If crickets are fed moldy grain a toxin builds up in their system and the toxin, 'Aflatoxicosis' can kill chameleons that eat the crickets. This has nothing to do with parasites. The crickets would have to have been exposed to chameleon feces to transmit coccidia. Most species of coccidia in chameleons can only reproduce inside a chameleon.
Pet stores that sell chameleons are a very bad place to buy crickets or other similar feeders. The risk of exposure to infected feces is higher.

Just another, and rather large reason to ask, Why are we still feeding crickets?

They have subpar nutrition, they can carry parasites, they die off on most folks, they can get alfatoxins, roaches are 100% better. I think I left out the Alfatoxins the other day, on my cricket rant. However I remember Jans loss of a handful of chams due to those bad crickets.

I get that these things are seemingly rare, however they are all cons to a cricket, and the cricket has zero pros. Nothing sets it apart as a feeder, makes it unique or ideal, its all cons. At that point, why?? Convenience, thats the only reason I see.

@JacksJill without going too much off topic, do we know of any cases where aflatoxins actually hurt a reptile? Not arguing. Genuinely curious how much of a threat it is. I've had my dry gutload get moldy before and i toss it, but it worries me if any of the feeders got into it.

Yes, Jean had some issues with it (I thought it was jannb, it was jean, here is the thread) https://www.chameleonforums.com/threads/aflatoxicosis.158656/

Its pretty serious, and all my dry gutloads have grain. Its scary, the stuff molds quick in my humid vivs.

Oops Jacksii beat me to it. That thread, was my tipping point to never ever feeding any cham crickets. Too many cons, Zero purpose.

I remember that, but I also remember it being speculation. I don't doubt it, but I don't think anyone ever found solid proof of it, just educated guesses. Other than that, I know of no one else that has had that happen. With all this said, I'm still very much for using roaches!

I mean yes, it was speculative, but speculation by Vets and Biologists, so I guess I have to trust that, may have been incorrect but something happened, thats for sure. Chams dont just start dropping dead.

I set up the hospital Bin... He fell two more times from the top catching the very bottom branch with his tail and smacking his head on the bottom. I have a call in to my vet about the bruising that he had from the fall earlier today.

I am broken...........

How knowledgeable is your vet with chameleons?

I would take Bahari back to the vet.

She is very knowledgeable. She was worried about his grip and he had a slight tremor. She wanted to hold off on getting blood work and an X-ray because the coccidia was so bad she wanted to tackle that first before causing him any more stress and to make sure we could get him through it.

She left by the time I called today. They are going to try to fit me in tomorrow to see him.

Oh Becca, this is so hard to even read about, I can't imagine how hard it is to deal with. I didn't know that Bahari had been falling since you got him. That picture of him you posted earlier is heartbreaking. Glad they are going to try to get you in to see vet again tomorrow morning.

I have been paying attention! I am reading all comments! The developments are very sad and painful to watch and endure!

I have blocked my children's access to the forums for now (possibly till they are adults) They should not have to see all of this! They have been taking care of the father and mother of Bahari! They had helped me dig up Bahari's egg when it was laid! They were excited when he hatched and were in awe of his color and character as both developed in to magnificence! They were so sad when I decided to sell him! They wanted to keep him as a breeder! Despite for how many chameleons we have, we do not use automatic misting! Everyone in the family helps taking care of the babies! Each and every baby is raised with love and the utmost care! My children should be spared the pain of this thread!

So many, many chameleons have left our loving care (driven by research, with the health and longevity of each chameleon as our focus) through the years without incidence and have transitioned very well into their new homes!

People who praise you today will stick a crown of thorns on your head tomorrow! When the time is ready we will discuss our perspective and experience in detail! To those of you who are so eager to cast stones please remember there are always at least two sides to a story....

To start with, I have nothing against you, no reason or urge to cast stones at all, have not still am not.

However I don't understand this post, and what is the second side to the other story?

Are you saying the parasites didn't come from your end?

Have you got Fecals for any remaining babies and the parents? That would have been the first thing I would have done.

I'm not going to cast stones even if it did (and no offense, but it's looking like it did) stuff happens. I fully don't think you knowingly sent any animals with Parasites. However it's looking like a strong possibility your clutch and maybe more of your collection, has a parasite problem.

If her first Cham isn't sick, it isn't her feeders. The fact this one, is as in bad of shape as it is, like she said the Vet said, it doesnt appear to have got them in her care. That's not crucifying you, as you said, it's stating the facts. No one is saying you did it on purpose. Stuff happens, it's how we handle it that matters.

HOW DARE YOU!!!!!! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF! HAVE I ONCE SAID ANYTHING IN THIS THREAD AGAINST YOU? NO!!!!!!!!

YOU THINK PEOPLE CAN'T PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER ALL ON THEIR OWN... I NEVER FED CRICKETS. BEMAN NOT ONLY HAD A FECAL PRIOR TO ME GETTING BAHARI BUT I GOT ONE THIS WEEK AS WELL. NO COCCIDIA IN MY HOME. I GOT HIM ON JUNE 26TH AND GOT THE FECAL ON JULY 7TH! RESULTS OF THE FECAL ON JULY 10TH!

I ASKED YOU TO TAKE HIM BACK WHEN I FOUND OUT HE HAD THIS. YOU SAID YES, THEN BACK PEDDLED. I ASKED YOU TO REFUND WHAT I PAID FOR HIM. YOU SAID MY 10 DAY "HEALTH GUARANTEE" WAS UP. YOU SENT ME A TOTALLY IMPERSONAL LETTER IN RESPONSE TO MY REQUEST. YOU DID NOT EVEN SIGN YOUR NAME... "THE: NUTS OVER CHAMELEONS TEAM"

HOW DARE YOU! I POSTED THIS THREAD TO HELP ME DEAL WITH SOMETHING THAT I NEVER ASKED FOR. SOMETHING I NEVER DESERVED. I TRUSTED YOU AND CARED ABOUT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I PUT YOUR REPUTATION BEFORE MY OWN NEEDS! I KEPT MY UPSET OVER WHAT HAPPENED OUT OF THIS THREAD. THE ENTIRE TIME PLEADING FOR HELP. BEGGING FOR SUPPORT. ALL OVER SOMETHING THAT WAS NOT MY FAULT!

AND NOW YOUR MAD. GET A GRIP MATT! THIS WAS AN ERROR ON YOUR SIDE. YES, YOU DID NOT KNOW. BUT THIS DOES NOT CHANGE THE FACT THAT YOU DID NOT DO RIGHT BY ME. YOU INSTANTLY WENT INTO PROTECTING YOURSELF! YOUR PERSPECTIVE... I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR PERSPECTIVE!

STAY OUT OF MY THREAD! YOU MADE IT VERY CLEAR HOW LITTLE YOU CARE FOR ME IN THIS SITUATION!

I have temporarily locked this thread so no replies can occur until I post my response. Please, everyone take what I write in the next post very seriously. I will not take sides or allow this thread to get out of hand and I am watching.
