Hey Everyone,

I wanted to share an image of a species I'm very excited to be working with. As a few of you know, I've been looking for a few U. pietschmanni for a while now and I couldn't pass on an opportunity that arose with the recent shipments from Madagascar.

They arrived today so I didn't bother them too much outside of the initial measurements (weight, SVL, TL, etc). I also take pictures the day they arrive for future reference.

Here is one of the male....

Enjoy!

Very interesting! I haven't heard of those before so they must be hard to come by. Good luck with them!

Nice pic, Luis. I had the opportunity to pick some of these up (at a very reasonable price) in my last shipment and I didn't. (she said as she's kicking herself....) As usual, thanks for sharing. :D You'll have to let me know how you do with these.

Hey Julie,

I was actually surprised at the condition of these two when they arrived. Had I known, I would have sprung for two pairs, but as times are these days, I'm being careful with space and funds. So far they're not very active, well, not as active as the others, but they are just starting to settle in.

I'm working on setting up our blog as a way to store all of our records and documentation. When that is done you'll see all notes I take for all of our animals. ;)

It's a project and a half though. Still trying to find a WordPress programmer to handle any custom "plugin" type functionality. ;)

Thanks!

Luis

Luis:

Thanks - you'll have to keep me updated. They look a little like flying geckos which I used to have. You'll have to PM me and let me know how much you paid for these (if you don't mind). I'm just curious to see if it is in line with what I was going to pay for them.

Sage: Um, the Bears could have used a little more of your "Go Bears" the way they played yesterday!!

Gorgeous Luis. They are also on our list of species we'd like to acquire. How many do you keep together and in what size enclosure? It looks like you use screen sides?

Beautiful animal.

Thanks!

All of our Uroplatus (except two male U. phantasticus) are in screen cages. We have the fimbriatus and lineatus trios in standard 2'x2'x4' LLL screen cages (due to their size) and our henkeli's are currently in a 2'x2'x3'. We acquired a few more fimbriatus and henkeli (currently in quarantine) last week so I will be rearranging a few of the enclosures soon. My plan is to house trios of the fimbriatus and lineatus in 2'x2'x3' enclosures and take the rack the two LLL cages were on and convert them into more 2'x2'x3' or 2'x2'x2's. I'm really liking the 2'x2'x3' cages though. I find that the bottom 12" of the cage to be rather wasted, especially with arboreal reptiles like these that tend to lurk around the night lights (above the cages) for the insects that walk up the sides. Which brings up a major benefit of keeping Uroplatus in screen cages...feeder insects can climb the sides. This alone increases the hunting area exponentially and I find far less leftovers than when I had a few in glass enclosures. It also increases the amount of maneuverable surface area for the geckos, which to me adds to the "size" of the enclosure.

Wow, I just realized how much I wrote without getting to your question directly...

We have a 1.1 of the U. pietschmanni in one of the screened 2' cubes but I'm convinced you could easily house a 1.2 or 1.3 in the same enclosure. I know a zoo who keeps singles/pairs in screen enclosures that are approximately 14"x18"x24" and their 1.3 groups in 2'x2'x3' screen enclosures.
