Can someone tell me....since they need to eat live crickets and worms and you shouldn't leave leftovers, do I have to go to the pet store daily, or...is there a way to store live crickets.
Welcome e to the forums! Go the left and click food and nutrition. But to store them, you can get a large rubber maid container, add some screen on it, put gut load and egg crate in it, and just add crickets. You can get crickets from Ghana in bulk. How many mouths are you feeding crickets?
Not to be mean, but if you already have one, and you don't even know about the simplest of their care, you should probably not have gotten a chameleon.
All the information you will need is in this site's nutrition section like the previous member already stated.
Go to a popular pet store, they will most likely have a stock of super worms or crickets.
Thanks for the quick reply...one veiled charmeleon..,We just got him on Christmas. How do I order from guana? The pet store says something different each time we ask a question. They told us yesterday to put 3 dozen and they are good for a week, everything I read is different.
I have one chameleon and I order them in bulk 1000 at a time.. I have a large clear rubbermaid container that i put them in.. I use egg cartons and paper towel/toilet paper tubes to give them hiding spaces and more surface area.. I use two large lids from something like a peanut butter dish, one for food, and one for water (the water is either gel or soaked toilet paper since a dish of water will cause them to drown). I then cut a large hole out of the lid for the container for air circulation, and to keep them from escaping, and keep the container at room temperature.. I can keep the crickets for at least a month in these conditions. I get them 1/2" and by the time they are used up they are about 1".. If you plan on just keeping lets say 100 at a time you can get a "cricket keeper" at the pet store that has tubes and dishes for food.. I have one and transfer about 100-150 crickets into it from the larger container.. makes it easier to get the 10 or so that he will eat.. You also need to "dust" the crickets before feeding them to the cham and always feed the crickets well since what you feed the crickets is what goes into the cham.. You will need calcium without D3 powder, multivitamin powder, and calcium with D3 powder.. If its a young chameleon you'll have to dust the crickets with calcium (without d3) every feeding, and use the multivitamin and the D3 about twice a month each.. I give him the D3 and multivitamins on Sundays (one sunday give the multivitamin, the next Sunday the D3, and repeat)
Oops, typo, I meant ghans, stupid auto correct. Their a site sponsor so look at the sponsor list. If you got the cham at a chain store and if you listened to their advice, it's more than likely they are wrong, they only know basic lizard care. What mind of enclosure are you using, just curious?
If you don't want to order 1000 at a time, cricket keepers make it very convienient for a 100 or so at a time. The removable tubes make it pretty easy to get them into a dust bag or dusting cup.
Normal as in they will do it, the only thing is it bad for them.. It will lead to impaction that is not good.. Are you using the potting mix in a pot for a plant? or as a lining for the enclosure? If its in a pot for a plant, cover the soil with smooth stones, if its a liner for your enclosure, take it out immediately..
oh jeez....ok, it was the whole bed of his enclosure...my daughter is taking it out now, my husband is running for more crickets, this is crazy...thx for all the info!
