My female veiled cham is a rescue and she was a mess when i took her. Now, i have put this special cage together because her ability to climb is permanently impaired. Her ribs were fractured and her spine is twisted. She had to be spayed for several reasons But, she is a happy girl now. I have her on a varied gut loaded diet, reptical and reptical w d. She is taking vitamins every other week and her poop is perfect. Lighting is like she likes it and she drinks new water all day. The thing thats wrong is one of her nostrils is a little swollen around the hole and the hole is full of calcium (?) or hard water minerals (?) or what is it? I want it out of there but i cant figure oit how to get it out. I have squirted water in there, wiped it and rubbed it but i feel like im hurting her. Help me figure out how to get it off.

She is lucky to have found a keeper who knows how to handle her. As Lazereth said the white crusties around the nostril is salts.
I woke up today and all around her nostril is swollen up. Just wanted to let you guys know. Look real close. Shoot, I hope I didn't do that to her when I was wiping it off all day. Dang it.

I am not sure about the information but i will do some more research for you... i know that the white crust is excess salts that the chameleon is removing from its system. I also know that there are many reasons for this amount of salt. The chameleon may not be hydrated enough and needs to drink more water to loosen the salts so they can be removed (do not try and remove it let the chameleon take care of it). Please make sure to do your own research but when this happened to mine i made sure to keep the area EXTRA humid and moist (with clean filtered water) so the crust can loosen. Try not to intervene until the chameleon is showing any negative signs. If the chameleon is showing these negative signs (dark colors, not moving as much, not eating.) try and contact an experienced vet for a little extra help. Please tell me if he gets better i would love to hear the good news <3. I hope this helps.

I have a large humidifier (I live in Denver) and a few small ones. I'll put the big one in w her and I put her in a room temp shower this morning. She acts normal. She is a real good eater, even ate the same day she had her surgery. Everything else is fine. I'll keep reading and keep her +moist for a few days and see how it goes

Its also the mineral from the water on those white crust, not the swollen part.
So, should I change her over to distilled water for a few days til the inflammation settles? I mean, the water is probably mountain type water and pretty hard...just til she settles down? I couldn't afford to put all these guys on distilled water all the time, but I can afford to get her straightened out and I'll be aware that she is sensitive to salts and other minerals.

Sorry about the late reply ,I just got back from the cemetery :).
Here are few questions for u regarding with ur cham, besides the white crust swollen nostril, have u notice any open mouth extra saliva, breathing hissing noise?
If not ,then please rince that nostril with some lukewarm water, clean it out as much as possible, even with a q tip to finish the last dry touch, since it probably fill with all the salt n mineral deposits inside.how is the other side of his nostril??same thing??
If u saw any pus fill inside, please bring him to a chameleon specialist vet asap.
Have you try to install a water filter system for your tap water?? Usually the mountain water are pretty pure if that is where u residing.also the reverse osmosis is the best filtration for removing as much as possible, including minerals. it does essentially what distillation does but in a different way.
a water softener is a cheaper way to remove hardness minerals that mostly include calcium, magnesium and iron. however, you are replacing those minerals with either sodium or potassium, depending on the salt you use.

I got a humidifier in here and gave her several clean rinses throughout the day. I don't know how to make her drink more but I made sure

Ok, I will check on one of those purchase things and I'm sure there are others. Her other nostril is just fine. Not any thing around it or in it. It's not swollen, either. There is no stringy stuff in her mouth or wheezing. She has sneezed a couple times. No pus or any colored anything coming from either nostril. Only what you see in the photo. I have been rinsing it but I will start gently wiping the stuff off carefully. I have Baytril from previous issues with other chams. But, I didn't use it cause I didn't want to if she didn't really need it.
