Dang cham...

So the other day i here my son laughing and I ask him whats so funny. He says "Dad, your panther chameleon is totally chowing down on dirt!" I panic and run over to the cage and sure enough, my cham has somehow dislodged a rock from one of the potted plants and is gulping dirt! I immediately stop this activity and replace the rock, but I gotta say I'm a bit concerned. Why on earth would he do this? I contacted the breeder I purchased him from and he advises keeping a close watch on him for impactions. He said that sometimes chams do dumb things. I guess! At least my quads seem to be semi-intelligent...

I know my female veileds used to eat the sand in the laying bin sometimes and I'm sure they were looking for more calcium for one thing. Pregnant humans sometimes eat dirt too, in some cultures. It might be done by some creatures (including humans) to get rid of parasites and pathogens or for gastrointestinal stress too. As far as dirt goes...it could be things like iron, zinc, calcium, etc. Just my opinion from what I've learned.

Graciliors, @Scottsquatch, they are graciliors! :)

Most everyone refers to the nominate species Trioceros quadricornis quadricornis as "quads" or "quad quads" and their subspecies Trioceros quadricornis graciliors as "graciliors."
Yeah, i know. Not sure why I called them quads. Probably distracted by somthing when I was typing.

Thats cool too! BTW, Grumpy is always crabby, but he eats most of his food outta my fingers. Pretty cool fellow. He is also shedding today. His whole head is white. Lol

I agree with @kinyonga sometimes they eat dirt because they lack certain minerals etc. My chameleon went through a phase where he was eating dirt too. Dirt just holds a good source of things because when I watch my bug cages when I first dump the bugs in they start to eat the dirt first before they realize there's veggies and stuff in there, it's actually really interesting. Which i personally never thought I'd say about bugs lol.

Will it be acceptable to say quad g's?

They will always be graciliors to me.

Quads and graciliors are quite different physically. Many people don't realize how different they are. I just think calling them quad g's is just muddying up the waters. Gracilior is such a pretty name, too. Use it! ;)

Ok, I guess that I will use Gracilior! :D
