Darn eye problems

Ok,so heres the situation... My Ambilobe chameleon Louie is STILL having eye problems Its been goin on for a couple months now. Ive taken him to the vets and they've given us omega 3 to give him for the rest of his life, along with this white stuff(i forget what its called because the label has faded from being in the fridge.) Ive given him showers every day for the past week or so. There was a pretty long period where he looked as healthy as he can be,had both eyes open,drinking and eating fine. Then he went back to both eyes being closed alot. Hes currently going on a hunger strike. Im wondering maybe the hunger strike has something to do with it because hes not gettin the supplements from his food,idk.

Normal temps 75-80, basking 90-95

5.0 reptisun UVB 2 60 watt basking bulbs(one i can turn down so its not too hot.)

my veiled, Spike, is having problems too. He keeps his eyes shut a lot and will like suck his whole eye into his head while its shut for a second, then kinda bulge it out a little bit. Hes not eating either... I'm taking him to the vet tomorow so they can run some tests. I've only had my little guy for a week and am kinda worried... He moves around like crazy when hes not sitting with his eyes clenched shut though, he poops healthy and drinks constantly. But then he will sit and keep his eyes closed for a couple hours. then he will go nuts again, crawling all over his cage. I dunno what is wrong, hopefully the vet can figure it out tomorrow.

Have you all tried terramycin. Many times eye problems are caused by something in the cage that got in their eye...sap from a plant, bark off a branch, maybe even a food item. Well if they get something in their eye it can cause bacteria growth causing an infection. Try terramycin if you haven't already and be careful with the omega3 you can overdose!

Ya,we only do VERY VERY small doses. Yes i do have a tube of terramycin,ive tried takin him off it for a week,maybe ill give him some more and see if it helps. With it i havent noticed any dramatic health increases,just minor ones.

Also ask your vet about Tobramycin Ophth. I have actually had better reselts with this than with terramycin but I think you have to get this from a vet, but it works great.

What brand and type (compact or tube) of UVB light do you have on the cage? What basking light?

No lie you just described my cham, sleeps in cage goes crazy when you take him out! So went to the vet on 2/7/08, She said he looks good and healthy, but his eyes looked a little swollen but she didnt think it was an eye problem maybe not enough vitamins so she said to give vitamins once a week instead of every 2 weeks. She also did a fecal and saw a few flagulates, and put him on metronidozole for 5 day. Ok so today is the last day of meds for the flagulates but he still seems the same. I called her today and told her he is still closing his eyes.

She said that maybe he has a upper respitory infection coming on (he weighs 47 grams) and try to give him .1cc of baytril for 1 week.

The other comment was maybe he was to cold I use a 60w she suggested a 75w.

So Ill keep you posted

where can you get this terramycin stuff? i think i might need some for one of my brevs because he got some substrate in his eye last week and now the eye is all foggy and slighty closed, i have rinsed it multipul times with water but it didn't do much except get the substrate out

Im using the 5.0 reptisun(well the one thats on the safe list) And the basking bulbs are also the safe ones,i forget off the top of my head now. I force fed him one wax worm with vit-d supplements on it.

Terramycin can be bought at most feed stores if you have a local one just give them a call and see if they have it. This place online also has it.

I really think though that if the eye is cloudy you should really have a vet look at it, it sounds like the substrate cause some damage to the cornea.

Well Louies eyes themselves arent cloudy. Its his eye sockets,it seems they've developed some white bumpy substance that is probably on the inside as well as the outside and wich is irritating him,says the vet. Shes taken some samples of it,even removed some to see if it helps the little fella, and she said its not a bacteria. She did say something is wrong with his liver because if it was healthy he probably woulda healed through this eye problem. So the omega 3 and the meds are for the liver.

okay thanks Glittergloomgirl and if i were to get some of this stuff do i just apply a little to the eye its, it would have to be a super small amount considering how small their eyes are

yes you try to put a small amount in each eye or dab a blob on the eye slit and it will go in. Make sure you rinse eye out with sterile saline solution first.

Hey Bucky,

Im sorry I was only trying to help. I can help you with info if you chameleon is not eatting. I had the same problem after my roomates cat tried to eat my cham he stopped eatting so the vet suggested Oxbow to feed.

You dont have to mix any calcium or vitamins in cause it already has it.
I would feed him about 2 to 3 cc about twice a day.



The other thing you can do is give NutirBAC df Probiotic for reptiles to help him deal with any antibiotics your vet give him, help promote "good" bacteria" in the tummy.

Thank you,thats really helpful Im sorry to be a jerk, this is just too frusterating and its been goin on way too long,im startin to feel stressed like a chameleon I just want to find a cure for him. Dont forget Louie also has eye problems not just goin on a hunger strike lol.
