Darn eye problems

Really? Does yours have the white stuff on the eye sockets? Or is he/she just closing them because they could possibly have something in there.

No white stuff, Mine just seems to nap or something during the day. You take him out of the cage he's hell on wheels lol. Yesterday I got a bigger lamp 8.5"clamp light, I was using a 60 watt in the smaller one, the vet suggested using a 75w for more heat and also to make it brighter. It may have seems too dark in there to him causing him to think it might be night time and sleep.

She also told me to give baytril he weighs 47 grams and I have the (enrofloxacin) Antibacterial Injectable Solution 2.27%, so I was told to give him .1cc orally for 7 days to see if maybe he was having a slight URI.

Well see if it works in 6 more days :)

whoa.. don't get discouraged, Bucky.
see if that terramicin help.
My vet prescribe me with gentamicin eye drop and that was pretty helpful.
It could very well be an irritant that has overstay its welcome.
You should probably go to another vet and get a second opinion.

The hunger strike can be from the stress of the sickness.

Bucky a pic would help.

my veiled, Spike, is having problems too. He keeps his eyes shut a lot and will like suck his whole eye into his head while its shut for a second, then kinda bulge it out a little bit. Hes not eating either... I'm taking him to the vet tomorow so they can run some tests. I've only had my little guy for a week and am kinda worried... He moves around like crazy when hes not sitting with his eyes clenched shut though, he poops healthy and drinks constantly. But then he will sit and keep his eyes closed for a couple hours. then he will go nuts again, crawling all over his cage. I dunno what is wrong, hopefully the vet can figure it out tomorrow.

Hey, i just got my chama about a month ago. His name is mojo, he has had the same thing as yours, he has his eyes closed alot, its mainly jus one of his eyes. usually he stays in one spot with his eyes closed and then he will open the one and starts roaming around the cage. he sucks his eye in and pushes it out. IT LOOKS CRAZY, like its got to hurt. i took mojo to the vet and she gave me a cream to rub in his eyes twice a day for 7 to 10 days. the cream is a Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Bacitracin Zinc ointment. he has been getting a little better every day.

ya i took him into the vet and shes keeping him for a couple days to see exactly what the deal is.

that looked like an abscess to me.
He probably get it from scratching or insect bite.
Do you have a vet nearby that can take care of chameleon.
the wound need to be cleaned and an antibiotic need to be given.
Terramicin will be good for now..

sicknesses in chameleons is usually connected to some other sickness they have , by the way your guy is perched there it seems to me like he has a case of a URI upper respitory infection, does he sleep like that often and does he perch himself upright so he can breathe??? ican you hear crackling noises or poping noises ?? if so then hes deff got a URI, in my case with my female veild her eyes got all puffy and she was perching herself vertical almost just to breathe but iv caught it early both times and the first time she recoverd in a weeks time and then it came back so i gave her an extra dose until she was done all 4 needles and shes been a good girl ever since ahah still mad at me though for the needle part , i have the name of the antiboitic i used and maybe your vet will administer some to you and try it out cause its not gona hurt her giving something that will booost there imune system, maybe a lil case of the poops ahah but there fine after but that antiboitic is called Ceftazidime and i injected it right in the upper arm towards her shoulders all yea gota do is get someone to hold your dude for you but its worth a try and hope this helps you out some

Ok,like ive said before,he HAS been to the vet many times...this has been going on for long time now sadly. There was a period where he seemed SUPER healthy. Theres not as much white stuff on his eyes anymore in that pic(like i said above the pic link...) I am trying to set up ANOTHER vet appointment. I have been giving him showers daily for the past week now. The last vet visit and the previous ones she said the calcium/phosphorous ratios were low and this was affecting his livers, there for his livers apparently had a hard time cleaning out his eyes.

I have had eye problems in the past with my panthers. The best way is to combat the eye infections with Batryl and terramycin. When you use these two antibiotics at the same time, you combat the infection from the outside as well as the inside. This method has been proven time after time by many breeders including Vincent of Screameleons. Go to your vet and tell them you want both. They will tell you that you only need one, generally the drops, but tell them that you know what you want and that they need to supply it to you. Be careful not to overdose on the oral antibiotic!

OI>< He has been on baytril before, I have a vet appointment this coming monday and ill ask. Ive been trying all i can do in the meanwhile, misting him 3-4 times a day, keeping the driper on,and the habba mist thing(i kno it doesnt really mist...)and giving him showers. I put the terramycin on his eyes every day and give him his meds, thats all I can really do while waiting for the vet visit:(

Eye Problem - Desperate!!

My cham has had her eyes shut for a bit over 1 week...She's not eating like she used to, I guess cause she can't see her food...I NEED HELP...I've read about others using Terramycin, is that by prescription only?

I got her for New Year's and I don't want to loose her...Please help!

The following is opinion...I'm not an expert or a vet. I'm assuming here that your husbandry is top-notch. Good UVB, not too little or too much supplmentation, good hydration, etc.

terramycin can be purchased at most any feed store. A huge tube for less than $10.

The terramycin by itself is probably only good when its obvious there is a debris problem, or when there is a problem with one eye only. If there is an issue with both eyes, and its not due to debris (or you can't find a cause for a debris problem), then its something else. Some other (deeper) problem.

My cham, Orion, had the eye problem. If you watered the punk out of him, he'd be fine for a few days, and revert to it. But it wasn't dehydration, I think the misting of his eyes helped his body fight an infection, but this is like taking a cough drop to cure a cold...it helps fix a symptom, but not the underlying problem. So I took him to the vet, they ran a fecal, and it came back negative. So we figured it must be some kind of infection that we couldn't otherwise detect. He was put on Baytril, and it worked. He perked way up. But after a while, (now), he's started having the same problem, and I'm guessing that he may not have been on Baytril long enough. He was taking one injection a day for one week. So, I started injecting him again, and I'll take him back to the vet on Saturday. What complicates matters is that at the same time this all occurred, he had a sperm plug issue, which I think caused him to be impacted. But perhaps that wasn't the issue. So I"m not sure of what was the exact thing that helped him, but since he's reverting to his former sleepy self, I'm thinking it was the Baytril and I didn't do it long enough.

So, knowing what I know, if I were you, I'd take him to the vet, run a fecal, and if it comes up negative, try Baytril. Heck, I'd be inclined to try Baytril no matter what since you're already going to incur the expense of the office visit. I did this, and it cost me like $74. The other thing I'd suggest is that you check your vet's math on the Baytril dosage. And do not use the Table in the Davidson book because it is wrong. In that table, everything is off by a factor of 10...500 grams should be 50 grams, 750 grams should be 75 grams, etc.

i was having the same prob with my panther for almost a month i went to the vet and he put him on neo-poly-bac for his eyes. i would just put a little bit around the opening of his eye and when i say a little bit i mean a little bit. i did that 3 to 4 times a day pluss gave him 3 showers a day for about 15 to 20 min. i was also giving him baytril 3 to 4 times a day. i treated him like this for about 15 days. he is doing just fine now i also swithched my gut load to the advanced cricket gut load from cricketfood.com and all my chams seem to be benafiting from it. i hope this helps man i know how frustraiting it is to have a sick cham, if you have any othere q's pm me. also another thing i did that helped alot was spraying his eyes with a realy light mist so he could wash his eyes out i did that 4-5 times a day.
