De-shelled beetles.

Well, went to check out my breeding bin today (supers) and thought Id try something new. Most chameleons will not accept superworm beetles, none of mine would take them, as soon as they bit in to the crunchy shell they spit it out. I found out that if you remove the outer shell of the superworm beetle they not only become more enticing (they flutter their wings when they are exposed), they also are more manageable for a chameleon and go down a lot easier. Everyone in my crew (who is big enough ofcourse) enjoyed a juicy beetle today. Just thought Id throw the idea out there.

thats really interesting hmmm...... did they really enjoy it??

i am guessing it is recommended to feed them less often than the superworms because of the chitin or whats your opinion on it??

sounds like a really cool idea

good job:D

That's a good idea. I'll try that next time I feed them off. My oustalet goes crazy over the beetles anyway, so removing the outer shell will just make it more enjoyable for him.

Reminds me of Pan with male dubia. He'll only eat them if they don't have wings, or if the wings are clipped off so most of the wings are gone. He like beetles though. He pretty much eats anything when offered except male dubia with wings.

Everyone likes male dubia over here, except for those who aren't big enough . Dubia go over pretty well over here.

Great, bug torture... You must be really bored.

Nope, just feeding something new and exciting.

I try to feed something different, that they've never had atleast once every two weeks, even if its just a different form of something else. Its just something I do for my chams.

Yeah they all enjoyed it, I dust one feeder in spirulina every week or two and I like to make it something interesting for them. I probably wouldn't feed them too often but being that they will eat fruits, veggies, and even cricket crack, they can't be too bad to offer once or twice a week.

Since when do most chameleons not like superworm beetles? 95 percent of my chams like them more than even hornworms. I obviously don't feed them too often as they are quite crunchy but I've never had a cham turn down any kind of beetle. I keep a mealworm colony just to have the tiny little beetles as treats to lure cams out of their cages. The only thing my chams like more are mantis or wild grasshoppers. Plus the superworm beetles eat anything I want to gutload them with. It works out nice.

Lol. I'm sure they didn't suffer too long. The best way to feed off the super beetles anyways is when they are still semi fresh, either white or reddish in color. They are soft then anyways.
