Decreased fat pads on casque

Moment of truth, taking biggy to the vet in an hour and a half. Nervous as this is my first time taking him, and also about the medication the vet tech was saying they prescribe. I'm going to set up a box with mesh on one side and glue a couple stick across for him to sit on. Also going to try and push for the ponazuril... Everything else I looked at has negative effects and are pretty rough on them during treatment. The last thing I need is dehydration, lethargy, and not wanting to eat

well... what an interesting trip to the vet. the carrying box I made worked great. He was safe for the 20 minute drive and could move around. the vet... well thats another story

after having to tell my husbandry to the vet tech, i waited 10 minutes to see the vet. it wasnt one of the two vets they told me i would see... so off the bat i was questionable. after she asked me about what was going on, mainly on the tongue issues she asked if she could examine him. i could tell she didnt really know what she was doing, and she grabbed him from his back... and I rarely have him puff up at me, but he was hissing and trying to bite. she looked quickly at his eyes, touched his legs, and then forced his mouth open to check in there. she commented on how strong his jaw was, and then proceeded to ask me how i was supplementing calcium.

She suggested for me to put the calcium in with the crickets rather than dust, an opinion i frankly took with a grain of salt... she told me that the tongue could be linked to mbd. then she told me the drug she wanted to administer, septra. i told her i had already done some digging about how harsh septra/albon/bactrim were on them, and told her id prefer if he went on ponazuril. she was pretty snappy with her response and said "then you tell me where you can get it". I mentioned compound pharmacies, and she left to see if it was available. she came back quickly and said she had found it and was going to get a quote.

the good news - im getting ponazuril. the bad news is the smallest amount they could give me was $130. on top of the $100 "examination" she completed. I ordered it and she left the room and that was that. she never mentioned anything about coccidia, how he could have got it, how to clean or what to do... just that i would have to pick up the medication when it came in. what a great vet!

Im sorry you are having troubles finding a good vet.
Perhaps some of the members in your general area could suggest a better choice for next time.... I have to drive over an hour to get to a decent vet, but its worth it given the lack of useful vets in my area (useful in terms of reptiles, frogs and birds (my pets), Im sure the locals are find with cats and dogs and rabbits)

im having trouble understanding why dave weldon is able to get the same amount of ponazuril for $27 while my vet wants to charge $130?? it just doesnt make sense

If they don't stock it regularly, they want you to take all they have to order.
Sucks, yes, big time.

I may be able to take some off you as well.
Gonna do a round of fecals shortly on all my stuff, and who knows if anything will pop up.

sam... lmk. right now i have no other choice to be honest.... dont want to risk only trying to treat it with reptaid i ordered.... ill spend more money on the fecal tests than the medication lol.

we should just get a microscope from ebay...

the order is 30ml. the dose is 0.1ml, so needless to say i can host an army.

The vet could tell the cham had parasites without doing a fecal??:(

My bad I didn't read the whole thread. but I'm pretty sure coccidia doesn't reproduce by laing eggs

He was just commenting on how coccidia was diagnosed to begin with. You mentioned they saw coccidia eggs, which is technically not correct, but the concept is correct. It doesn't change anything, no worries.

well, first 3 day round is done. he had a poop on day 2 of treatment, and it was more solid than usual... so we'll see how he fairs on the week off of the treatment..

hes usually such a pain to get drinking, but ive seen him under his dripper lately and also was able to start giving him water drops from a syringe and he was licking them off for extra hydration. his fat pads are looking great as of now, and im sure hes going to start gaining some nice weight now that the medication will take care of the coccidia.
