Did I get sold a fake veiled?

Wow.
Interesting food for thought.

Hey Chris.....have you had the opportunity to keep/work with the arabicus?
I'm curious about them, and haven't run across any available.
Are there any breeders of them that you know of ?
Thanks

-Brad

Never seen or heard of any arabicus in captivity in the US. Also, I could be wrong but I don't think the calyptratus that are coming in as WCs are coming directly out of Yemen either.

Chris

There seems to be some confusion about the existence of the 'desert' Calyptratus in the US. The breeder I got this guy from had available babies of the 'desert' species he produced from wild adults less than a year ago. I saw the babies in person but not the adults. He said they were poor sellers since they're essentially a smaller, less impressive veiled and he was asking a little less than for the veileds. If I had thought they were the only ones ever to enter the hobby in history I might have picked up a couple (not really).

Aaaah. I see. I would be interested in seeing a photo of him at his resting colors. If his coloration is that different from other veileds, he may actually be quite valuable, even for breeding purposes. People seem to like unusual morphs. The old "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Frankly, I find the translucent veileds to be a bit unattractive, but apparently they are highly desirable to others.
Sorry, I didn't mean exactly like a panther female. His resting colors do very much remind me of a panther female but much darker and with some dark green.

They were most likely Ch. africanus which did come in last year in large numbers and in a lot of ways look like a veiled with a lower casque.

Chris

No, they were not C. africanus. He had a C. calyptratus supspecies.

Marketing Ploy! Or so it would seem.

Who is this Breeder? Let him come forward and share is unique Veileds.
It seems like an odd marketing ploy for him to tell me they are unimpressive and poor sellers and then to keep none of the stock for breeding. I'm guessing marketing isn't your dayjob

I don't know that this male has anything whatsoever to do with those (my posting here was in hopes of finding out some useful info to determine whether or not I want to use him for breeding, not confronting inuendo on what species some people believe are available in the hobby). If I were to find out he weren't a 'regular' veiled I'd get rid of him and get a different male. I was just a little curious since the time periods are curious and he's an odd color with a small cask. He may easily be different than stock I've seen before.

He's no different then a "normal" veiled. Every species has variation within the species. These can present themselves in color variations, size variations and build variations. I've had veileds colored similar to your animal in the past and have seen quite a few with similar shaped casques. Its just variation within the species.

Here is a photo of one of the first chameleons I ever owned. He shows a little more yellow then yours but they are very similar I think. I believe my male was quite a bit older then your male when the photos were taken which could easily account for the casque size variation.

And I think those who have contributed to this thread have done a great job of researching, raising questions, and putting some perspective on the target subject.

Sorry to sound unprofessional, but Im new to the hobby. I have a male Yemen, around 3-4 months old. The only colours I've seen him display is full green which can be from dark to light, and the odd occassion when he showes darker black/brown spots/lines. He began to show more colouration after I changed his enclosure.

is there a certian stage of his development that he will begin to shore more colours?

Give it a few more months, You should start seeing slight barring colors in light green to dark green pattern on body now. At 6 months you'll start to see males truer color. At a year old you should see his full color. Here's a birthday picture of 1 year old male I keep, who is now going on 2 years with about the same color today.

Thanks for the reply. I like the picture, very impressive.

He does have a few very light markings like lines on him that run along his body.

Ugly? Have you ever seen an ugly chameleon? This one is gorgeous! I'll take him off your hands, if you like ;)!

I just realized how long ago this thread was started...

Anyway the only way that is a fake Veieled is if it is made out of some kind of plastic... That is an impressive animal.
