I took my girl to the vet and they say she has large follicles...look like images of eggs I've seen...It was an ultrasound. Anyone have insight for me?
I googled it and found very little that I understand...
Follicles are round and eggs are oval from what I understand.
Three main stages...."previtellogenic stage (PV) with the abscence of visible follicular structures, vitellogenic stage (V) with the presence of round follicular structures >2 mm diameter and the gravid stage with the presence of oval egg structures"... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20471385
Hi rjhavens,
The follicles are the structures containing the ovocyte (the female gamete) on the ovary. In chameleons, they can seem huge and look like a grape of round structures on both sides. The eggs are the structures formed after ovulation, either with or without fecondation. Does that answer your question?
Practically, follicular stasis can resolve spontaneously be resorption (but in many cases, if the chameleon is sick, you may need a surgery), versus if you have already eggs in the reproductive tract, it is gonna need to be laid after calcification or removed via a surgical spay.
