idk the exact name of it but its the red bulb. my fried has some exp with reptiles and said id need one for a cham most likely. do i or no? i have the uvb. i just turned it off because he was like staying like a light brown with just tint of green, and from what ive been reading is that they turn brow when theyre hot to regulate temp. so is he just too hot? i dont handle him much and i think hes still young. since i turned it off about 10 mins ago hes seems to be going back to green. ive only had him for 5 days now.

No on the red bulb...but they do want a "basking" light. Most of us use plain incandescent bulbs, the kind you buy at the grocery store. What wattage depends on a lot of factors. The big thing is how hot it makes your basking spot. How hot you want it varies with the type of chameleon.

He definitely needs a heat lamp. Without a heat source they can develope all sorts of issues, and they also have problems digesting food if they dont have access to a heat source. He could be turning a darker shade under the UV lamp to be attempting to soak up a miniscule amount of warmth from the visible light in his cage, and his UV lamp should be left on. If he is younger he will require a lower wattage bulb for his heat source that as he gets older can go up, along with cage size.

Check the link Wykd provided. Your chameleon needs 2 lights. One provides the UVB which helps him absorb calcium so he has strong bones. The other is a lamp for heat which promotes digestion and keeps him healthy.

The red light is considered a "no-no" here. A plain household bulb will do fine and will cost a lot less.

What species are we talking about? Chams usually turn a darker color to help them absorb heat more quickly. Once they reach "operating temp" they move away from the heat, so their color changes again.

The red bulb isn't good because they need to be able to recognize the spot that is best for them to bask, don't waste your money on those bulbs you see at a pet store, the normal white bulbs do a better job.

You should expect to see a darker colored cham when they are under the light, mine goes from light blue to grey and black. When you shut it off he turned green because he has no more light to absorb.

In short YES get a basking lamp ASAP!! :)
