changed the uvb lighting in my chams viv today - not too sure he is too keen on it though?

i original had a coil light system & i have now changed it for a strip uvb lighting system.

since i changed it, he keeps going to the bottom of his cake & is darker in colour than before i changed the lights - he is still eating & drinking.

i dont know if i am being paroniod as i my 1st cham died last week:( - or should i be worried & change back to his old light?

As far as I have read on here the coil lights can cause eye problems and should be avoided. I use the exoterra reptiglo 10.00 tube that fits in the hood on top of Lily's cage. I've never used the coil ones but I'm sure someone more experienced will add their comments/opinions too at some point!

He might just need to get used to the new lights, I'm sure that the tube will be better for him in the long run. Tubes need changing every 6 months (exoterra) as the uv levels drop with use. I think the reptisuns can be changed less often but I'm not sure as I don't use that brand. Think they are more expensive too.

This forum is a brilliant source of help and advice and has certainly proved very useful to me. Although I don't post that often I'm online reading every day! :D

yeah, thats what i've read, & another reason why i changed it.

i thnk i was just being a little parrariond - he's back at the top basking now, eatng a few crickeets on the way up

i'm using the 5.0 - do you know what the difference is bwtween that & the 10 that you are using?

sorry for all the qusetions, but as you said these boards are great x

Back when I looked into it I found the difference between the 5 and 10 is the depth that the uv rays go down into the cage. I chose the 5 because my chams like to bask about 5-6" under it. I have my basking light set up by the basking spot and have adjusted them so they get between 85-90 deg. heat in that spot. It gets pretty warm in my sun room in the afternoon so I turn the basking lights off but they still like to sit under the UV bulb.

I'm not sure about the differences in the numbers of the lights (2.0, 5.0 & 10) but think it may be the strength of the uv output? I got Lily's setup under advice from the shop I got her from. I asked for the same setup that she was in at the shop (right down to buying the large log that was in her cage!) to minimise stress for her (she was 6 months old and had been reserved but not collected).

The owners have several chameleons and other reps of their own as well as what's in their shop. Plus I had to sign an agreement and fill out a short questionnaire so that they were satisfied that I understood how to care for a chameleon. Anyhow, I asked sooo many questions (and still do)! It's rather scary taking on responsibility for a chameleon! I was so scared that I would do something wrong and make her ill!!

Have just checked the tube's packaging and the 10.0 says 33% uva, 10% uvb. Don't know anything about ceramic heaters I'm afraid. Lily's got an exoterra SunGlo 35W daylight bulb for basking - its in the centre of the hood. I was told that's the max. wattage that you can put in there.
