dubia roaches

Hi, i'm starting a dubia colony in a plastic tub and uses a 75w infrared heating bulb fixed to a light dome.. i'm using 2 egg cartons to support the light dome.. will it cause fire?

I wouldn't of thought it would make much difference, mine breed like rabbits at room temp but if you do I would get a 50w buld at the most

It is correct dubia breed fatser when kept warmer. They do well with an area of 90f heat which is best done my a heat mat or cable.

I have tried breeding at room temp and they bred but very slowly. With heat I have found they breed and mature allot quicker than before.

Be careful with the plastic tub. I use glass because 1) they will climb out of plastic, and 2) a heat pad will melt it which you need to breed them well. I have had this happen, when I took the heat pad off the plastic where it was was warped badly.

I think they like it like that ^_^... This is my store room and I off the light when I leave

If its a nice hard plastic then just use a small heat pad. If your herp room is really warm or you have a wooden cage (with some other herp in it)you can just set the tub above the radiant heat.

Dubia roaches breed MUCH faster if they have a hot area in the enclosure you are keeping them in. I use heat pads on one side of my bins, and they work great! Just make sure you get a good plastic tub, because if you don't it could cause some melting... With my roach colonies I make sure one side of the bin is in the 70s to 80s and the other is over 100 degrees. Hope this helps!

I keep mine with lid closed and center cut out and screened. Easiest and safest heat source I've found so far is a seed started mat heater from the nursery. Tape it to the outside of one side of the container and they are happy. I have new nymphs nearly every day!

Just out of curiosity.. how many Dubia's should one use to start a colony? And where did you buy them?

I want a colony started quickly, but I only have one juvenile Chameleon that will eat them. So I'm not sure how many I should get. I found a website selling 500 "assorted" for $50. That seems like more than I need. I found another site recommended by the forum, which sells only 25 in a cup for about $10. I would need to buy multiple cups. So the first site sounds much cheaper. Advice?

Here is my blog which has recommendations for housing, feeding them off, and purchasing a starter colony:

As for heat, I prefer a heat mat on the bottom of the tub. I use tubs with very smooth walls so that they cannot climb them. If you use a tub with textured walls, they may climb the inside. Aside from the sponsors and classifieds, faunaclassifieds.com is a good place to check for roaches at good prices.

How do I get my roaches to grow faster? They are in a warm place and fed regularly, but are still tiny. The adults are breeding well. The escapees in Ivy's enclosure are thriving, tempted to start feeding the others dead schefflera leaves and chameleon poop...

Raw sugar. Its like roach fertilizer. I mix it in with my bug burger. They also like corn muffins...

You can put tape around the top to help with any small nymps that can clime. The small ones are the only ones that will climb. With heat if you dont want to put a heat tape under it you can put them on top of a cage
