Dubias - I'm sold

If you use the non medicated chick starter at your local feed store and put carrots and some veggies for moisture they will breed like crazy at room temp. The chick starter acts as a good gut load and hasnt mildewed yet for me.

Does the chick starter make them breed any different? I gutload the same with crickets/roaches. Raspheys, oranges, veggies. About to make veggie blocks.

Does anyone know where I can get dubias in Canada? I've tried to find them - I hate crickets. I had one get loose in the house and take up residence behind/under the fridge. I spent 2 nights hunting for it while it kept me awake chirping like it was on speed before I finally caught it! Never mind the smell!

I can't seem to find a supplier in Canada though. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

lol. Yeah crickets are a pain...I hate when mine get out on the loose!

I've heard that Dubias were banned in Canada if I recall. You'd have to have a permit to obtain them. But people still find resources to get them, it'll just bit a bit harder for you guys. Try PMing a member who has dubias in Canada.

And to the OP, i wish my cham ate dubias. He ate a few large adults, thought he loved them but now he doesn't eat them at all! haha...

I have a problem with the wife also. I guess I could call them dubia beetles. She wont even feed him crickets so I know she won't bother looking at these "beetles". I know I've said dubia roaches before but I think she only heard the roach part. I'm sure I could pull one over on her. I might give it a try once I get rid of the 500 crickets I just got:)

My girlfriend wasn't too excited about me having roaches in our room.

eventually I got her to hold a full grown adult dubia, she thought he was cool...But then again, my girlfriend is the spider killer in the house :)

Even the petstore workers trip out how she walks in and orders our feeders on the way to work lol.

She even wanted to get a madagascar hissing roach...But i'm on the edge with those things haha!

well my wife is deathly afraid of roaches. She screams like there is a snake a foot away from her, so she definitely wouldn't "get used" to them if she knew what they were. but maybe i can trick her lol

I managed to pass them off as south american pill bugs (hey they even curl into a ball sort of upside down) till the adults stared showing up...

I HATE ALL roaches, and even looking at the dubias sends shivers up my spine, but I got really tired of the noisy, stinky crickets, so I learned to deal with having a giant bin of dubias hanging out in my room. Even so, I still make my boyfriend feed them because I get the wiggles every time that bin gets opened. That being said, I have never found an escaped dubia, even though my crickets and Turkestans were always finding ways out of their cages.

It seems to keep the Roaches in better shape and I noticed a double in the amount of young i get. I use to not even keep up now that i use the chick starter I have extras i had to setup a new bin. I just wish my Mellers could eat them.

At room temps too? Hmm.. I'll have to get some, I'm guessing you gutload your feeders in a different bin?
