Don't let him eat the dirt. Mine will try to do that whenever I leave the pot uncovered because there bugs also in the dirt which he finds more exciting than crickets being as he doesn't see them often. Just cover it with some rocks or something. Or you could use towels etc. just be sure to change them out often.

While searching the archive, I came across a theory (not scientifically proven) to the effect of chams eating dirt because of their natural instinct for getting additional minerals not found in their everyday food? Either that or they're just bored :)? I wonder if they also eat dirt in the wild? It would be interesting to know.

Some claim that the dirt can cause impaction but others think that it is a natural reaction to something missing in their diet and that it is no big deal. I was worried about our Cham eating dirt so I covered the dirt in his potted plants with small rocks. Whichever way you decide to go, make sure that you are using organic soil in the pots.

Rocks covering is good. Make sure they are clean. A good boil in water will do ,air dry.
Also make sure these rocks are big enough. At least 1" INCH. and bigger.:)
