Euthanasia question

Is your chameleon sick? That would be a question you would have to ask them. Where do you live? I might be able to recommend a reptile vet.

By looking at your profile you live in NY. Here's a few NY vets

He is sick, hasn't used his tongue in approx 3 weeks. He would attempt to get close to food and eat that way, but to no avail. I've held him n put food to his mouth, but nothing. Ive had him for 3 years and he's never had a single health problem.

and thank you for the vet recs, I've been calling around my area as well.

Some chameleons lose the use of their tongue for different health reason and some never get the use of the tongue back. I just alway hand feed mine. I had a panther that I had to hand feed for over two years until he died of a stroke at 5 years old. If he's weak you could buy some Flucker's Reptaboast to get him boosted back up. If you don't want to hand feed you could also send him to Elisa at ChamEO chameleon rescue. She has vets and would get him fixed back up and then she would find him a forever home. She sends you a shipping label to ship him to her and it cost nothing to you.

Euthanasia- depending on whether the individual vet has experience with chameleons!!
I had my baby euthanised only 4 weeks ago, and she was euthanised by a normal vet ( cats and dogs etc) but she was the owner and felt comfortable enough to do, she had previously seem my lola prior to this when my herp vet is out of town!!

She was put to sleep humanly and safely x

I'm really sorry your chameleon is not doing well. You can hand feed even if they can't use their tongue. As long as they are able to swallow, you can hand feed or even force feed. I wouldn't euthanize for that reason.

Things like silk worms are easy to hand feed or even leave in the cage so the chameleon can walk up to it and just eat it. Stick bugs are another bug that often stays in one place so they can walk up to it and grab it themselves. I've done things like decapitate green banana cock roaches to keep them alive for a few minutes, but pretty much in one spot.

I'm currently force feeding a newly imported wild caught that was imported in early May and to be honest, I don't know if he has ever eaten one bug on his own in the entire 3.5 months I've owned him. (Yes, I have a good reptile vet working with him.)

Euthanizing reptiles is problematic. They are too small to inject directly into a vein or artery. They don't die all that easily. Sorry for the graphic descriptions that follow. Many reptile vets won't release the body to the owner unless they have euthanized and then after they believe it dead decapitated or frozen them solid for some time (I can't remember how long). Many good reptile vets have sent home euthanized animals to have the owner call 24 hours later that their animal is alive. I had a vet euthanize one and I insisted on a cervical dislocation before we went ahead and did the necropsy. Some vets inject directly into the heart or the brain but I refused that. The vet injected into the belly so the euthanizing agent was slowly absorbed. I think another time I would insist on a gas to put the animal to sleep under an anesthetic and then do something like injecting into the heart. Or anesthetize and then decapitate. I would make sure your vet knew what they were doing with reptiles and the problems reptiles pose when euthanizing.

Absolutely agree with above.
Mine had some gas to put to sleep ( however she was almost dead anyway tbf sorry to be blunt) then she was injected, and stayed with the vet!!
I was too heartbroken to have her home ( under the circumstances of how she became to be euthanised), they kept her and I paid extra for crematorium...

I'm very sorry for your loss. Sometimes being part of that decision can really gut you. Again, my condolences.

It's OK, just something I have to deal with isn't it!! I won't be having another one for a very long time x

Always wondered where they cremate small animals, I'm guessing they throw them in all together. I'm a funeral director and still haven't a clue on that haha
