Ever seen a female ambilobe look like this?

...we put the "shemale" tag on them. At that point, they are of no use to me, and we don't sell them so that they can be someone else's problem...

you could sell them cheap as pet quality, non-breeding. Lots of people only want a female as a pet, rather than as a breeder

Agreed with Sandra...I wanted a female, but fell in love with a little male...Shemale sounds like all the fun of a female, but without the worry of infertile eggs, Which would be great for some people!

lots of good points! I would estimate that half of the females I have sold have been for pet purposes, the others dedicated breeders.

and Jim, I have no doubt that if I went through one male and one female necropsy with you, you would forever be able to differentiate testes from eggs. as always, I offer my services to you if you are interested. 2 weeks ago I gave some lectures at Python Hunter Shawn Heflick's first ever week-long Croc University at his croc farm nearby. the folk in attendance had a great time and learned a lot, and that session was only PowerPoint slides! I showed them blood draws a few days later. anyway, happy to offer private/group services for a detailed necropsy or whatnot.

however, after thinking about this for a few days and all of the literature that I've read I've come to a different hypothesis. I don't think the organs would be changed or doubled as in transgendered types. my guess is that it's the hormones that are out of whack, or even just reproductive issues for the many reasons that they exist (failure of conception, "endometriosis"-like issues for chams, etc). transgenders do exist for sure (I know a Scottish terrier with male and female parts), but I don't think it's what explains the majority of this thread. unfortunately, the cost of testing for those hormones would be prohibitive. grant money, please!! ;)

Well, they really are few and far between. And unfortunately for those "girls", they are not typical of either males of females. When I get the next couple more, I hope to be able to work with Dr Oz to examine them at a level that also means their premature demise. I am quite fine with that folks. But after that, I am more than glad to farm them out to good homes at zero profit.

It is a problem for me to identify all times that it manifests, in that you have to have that girl grow to near maturity before you realize things are not right. I move out 95% of more of my CBB offspring before I ever have any true hint of their adult persona. But as I am able, I will identify such, and we will go from there.

I would pay for a shemale non breeding chameleon.. :(

i have the opposite--a tiny little girl who won’t breed FS—can we call her a “shefail”? :D

Jim, happy to work w/ you anytime. besides basic necropsy, histopath of the repro organs would be critical. i can speak to one of the labs that i use and see if anyone’s interest is sparked enough to heavily discount prices. the last cham i sent in for a nose-to-tail necropsy and full histopath of all organs cost be $365 or so.

unfortunately i don’t know anyone measuring the sex hormones in blood, which is where i think the issue is more likely to be found (assuming it is “an issue”).

Reasonable. I don't disagree with you.
