Eye closed.

My new male Panther moved into his vivarium last week, I have allowed a good settling in period and noted he is eating and drinking well.
A couple of days ago I noted his right eye was closed & he seems to rub it on branches or my finger when he is out of the cage. The eye does open when he is being handled, but closes again when he's back in his viv.
I did try to rub it gently with a wet cotton bud, but that didn't work.
Any suggestions? Has any collector experienced this in the past? Thank you very much - Stewart.

A lot of keepers have the same problem as you are describing. I am having some issues with one of mine on and off with his one eye. I would try to start by flushing the eye with plain saline solution. The one that is used for contacts. Try to do it when the eye is open so if there is something caught in there it can maybe be washed out. Other people say it could be a Vitamin A deficiency. I don't think it is the case with mine though as I do a multi vitamin and good gutloading with things rich in Vitamin A. Lastly, there could be an infection of some sort for which you will need an eye antibiotic ointment which you will need to get from a vet. I am trying my second one with my chameleon. The vet said he noticed a little conjunctivitis in my chameleon so I have been trying the antibiotic. My chameleon's pupil is very small and has been that way for many months now. Is yours small in comparison with the other eye? I was afraid mine was blind but he does seem to be able to see with it, but I am not sure how much. Mine will hold his eye open for days like normal and then sometimes I look in the cage and he is closing it! Very frustrating!!
