Eye issues

Hey guys! Lately, Sergio has been blinking a lot, and today I discovered that his right eye is a little swollen and seems to be opalescent. I think he can't see properly because he always gets nervous about my phone's camera, but he doesn't even bother about it now. Any idea what this could be? Should I be worried?

Definitely something to be worried about. Have you had your care reviewed? Do you have an experienced vet in your area?

Make sure they are actually experienced with reptiles at the very least... A regular vet that does not usually treat reptiles is not going to have the knowledge to know how to treat this properly.

Yes, the doctor is a reptile specialist, hopefully, he'll know what to do! Thanks for the advice!

I would go over your husbandry as well with us. Then we can make sure to rule out anything husbandry related. While the vet is then able to do their side of irrigating that eye and possibly antibiotics. Let me know if you want me to post the husbandry review for you to fill out. :)

Thank you, that might be useful for the future!

Chameleon Info:

  • Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care? - Panther chameleon, Ambilobe, male, approx. 7-8 months. Since last October.
  • Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? - 2-3 times a day. In the morning, during the day, 1-2 hours before the lamps turn off. I feed max once a day, and I add water every time.
  • Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders? - Mostly crickets, 3-4 pieces a day, sometimes cockroaches (1-2 pc. a day), and wax moth larvae max 1/day.
  • Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? I usually add Reptiplanet Calcium powder on the bugs, and every 2-3 weeks once with the same brand but Calcium+D3. I made a mistake in the past, for the first 2 months I've used the Calcium+D3 only, and many forums said that it's wrong (the pet store cashier said it should not matter which type I use...)
  • Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking? - I have a water pump, and I use filtered tap water. I shoot a big load of water to the leaves inside the terrarium. I see him drinking droplets from the leaves.
  • Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? Once a day, mostly brown-white-pink. No, I don't know about being tested for parasites.
  • History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. - I've bought it from a local (Hungary) chameleon breeder.

Cage Info:

  • Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? It's a 50x50x90 cm terrarium, made by a professional terrarium maker, full of glass.
  • Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? - from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM the lamps are automatically on, then it turn off. When I'm in the same room where the terrarium is, and it's after the lamp off time, I put a cover on the glass, so as not to disturb him while sleeping. I don't know the brands of the lamps, but I have an UV lamp in the middle, and two 35W lamps on the side.
  • Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps? No, I don't measure temperature, not humidity, I have no info about it.
  • Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? -
  • Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? - Yes. I'll send a photo you'll see. It was planted by the terrarium maker.
  • Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? - It's in the living room, next to the TV. The terrarium is sitting on a furniture, so the top of the terrarium is around 180 cm.
  • Location - Where are you geographically located? - Hungary, Budapest :)

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about. - Above this message :)

So just glancing through. My concern is the UVB type you are using... Those screw in bulbs are usually Mercury vapor bulbs and put out extremely high heat and UVI levels. I have seen where these can cause all sorts of issues including eye issues with chameleons. I am guessing there is screen between the bulbs and the enclosure or is the cage open to the bulbs? T5HO fixture and a 6% uvb linear bulb is what chameleons should have. I can give you more info on that later.

Knowing temps and humidity are both going to be really important. Male panthers really should have a basking temp of 80-85 max. Then a cooler side of the cage to escape the heat.

Can you post pics of your supplement types please? Then I can look at the labels and see exactly which ones they are. Supplements do matter so the person that told you that D3 was fine to use all the time was incorrect. D3 and A are both fat soluble vitamins they can be overdone and cause a lot of harm. So typically these are only recommended to use 2 times a month say the 1st and the 15th.

Then you have vitamin A that is needed for eye health. This is another reason why I want to double check your supplements to make sure yours has it.
