A fly culture is self sustaining once started. They feed off the culture media and do not require any addition other than what you used to start the culture. The culture will produce thousands of flies over the course of a month. I can get a melanogaster culture to produce for six or seven weeks if you dont let the fly population get real high. The general rule of thumb is you dont what to keep a culture going for more than a month because mites can start to become a problem. Check out youtube. There are a ton of vids about fly cultures. The fridge trick is the best thing you can learn for fruit flies! Also when I started my own cultures I was told to fridge them then tip some into a funnel so the fell straight down and into the jar! Brilliant! It worked a treat! Flies are very good baby feeders but are a total pain in the bum! Nothing worse than taking the lid off and letting out more than you expect - even though they can't fly they still swarm on foot and they are fast l'il boogers too, lol! As you can probably tell, I learnt the hard way about the fridge trick!

haha yea, the fridge trick is def something i will remember when it comes time to start the cultures.
i had some before for Kink to eat when he was still very wittle. they were so obnoxious to deal with. crawled everywhere

i've got a larger m fly culter going. i'll buy some stuff this weekend so i can make it larger and have a few more.

Im probably going to start the culture around the time i drop the boys off. No point breeding them right now. though i might start a small culture to get some practice in.
(that way if i kill them, i wont be left with 30 someodd hungry mouths to feed)
THough I really hope clair only has like 16 eggs. lol.

i hope she only has 30 max. 15 each isnt bad and thats assumeing none mold over and 100% hatch rate. i've already decided how im going to set up bins and where im buying my lights. i think i'll be breeding crikets aswell so this doesnt break me.
