Hi all, im excited today since i just set up my panthers outdoor free range:D, he has his own hibiscus that is protected from predators and is chameleon escape proof:D so far so good. itll just be hard getting him to get used to it and his cage since i can only use it for a few days at a time when im home, so now i just have to devise something for my veild since Titan has his outdoor cage too. Anyone else want to share pics of their outdoor cham areas?

Hi LL

Have you got any pics of your free range? I am planning on setting one up soon and I'd like to see what your escape proof enclosure looks like.

Etienne

its really not that complicated. ive got pics uploading right now to post, all you do is buy a tomatoe plant cage, place it at the base of the tree, and line the top of the cage with something your cham cant climb (ex. paper, plastic, etc.)

THAT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO ESCAPE PROOF.

You do realize that your Cham can walk out on one of the branches that hang past the chicken wire at the bottom and drop to the floor and walk away right?

It will happen.

It looks cool, but I don't want your next thread to be my panther escaped.

most chams would, he wont....im not dumb, i know what can happen. IF he were to escape he aint going anywhere anyways.

Wha?????? He wont but most will???? He wont go anywhere if he does???

I did not insinuate even in the slightest that you were dumb. You are being defensive over a warning. I am trying to help you keep your cham and keep it safe.

Other than escape I can name a few other problems

Here is one

BIRDS will have no problem snatching him up from that tree either.

At the very least extend the cage below to go out beyond the tree's canopy. If he drops he will land in there with no where else to go but up the tree.

1. he wont go any where.....i have a fenced in yard...2 he IS supervised and i believe i mentioned in the first post that he is only in there when im home, i that tree is visible through my living room window, im aware of all the risks, and just to make it "safe" i went ahead and screened the whole thing. ;)

EDIT: i apologize, i did not read your whole post. i was at fault.

Just make sure you are sitting there when he is outside
I think the idea is great don't get me wrong. I wanted to make sure others were aware of the risks and that it is not escape proof. For what it is its great.

I just don't want you to be ignorant to the fact that he will climb a fence , he will go anywhere he can and even if you are watching it only takes a minute for him to disappear.

You would be surprised how far these guys can stretch to get where they want.

Hi LizardLover!

I debated heartily with myself before I decided to reply to this thread. I have to agree with Ryan on this one, but I do totally understand your need to let your friend have his perceived freedom. That's why I build such HUGE cages for mine. Even the indoor ones are big because I want them to have their sense of freedom.

But let me tell you about Max's little adventure... just as a "This can happen to you - I hope You'll be as lucky as I was!" If only as a cautionary tale...

I was cleaning Max's habitat one day and put him in the Ficus I keep for temp holding within eyesight. I turned back to what I was doing for just a few moments... I was right there next to the dang tree, in the middle of the patio, and when I went to get him to put him in his cage, he was gone! Like 20 seconds, and he was gone! I wasn't in the house, I was right there.

:( Needless to say, we searched the yard, then the neighbors yards, then ours again, and again... For days. We put up posters, we visited our local pet shops, everything!

On the 7th day a kid that lives around the block told my son he thinks he knows who has Max! Some kid had been bragging about the lizard he had found on his roof! We went there and took pictures of Max... and sure enough! It was him! :D

They had found him 6 DAYS AGO! The next morning! On their roof! He was 5 1/2 blocks away, BEHIND US! And he was on their roof by the next morning, after getting away at about 3:30 pm the day before.

Moral to this story is: Chameleons are curious, have a wandering spirit, and can travel FAST!

Free Range... not unless my eyes don't leave them for a second! It's not worth the heartache when you loose sight of them. (I know all of us have had those little "uh-oh, where is he?" moments? Even while looking in their cages! Common' admit it!)

My Story's Ending: We got Max back, after I went to the ATM and got $340 cash to pay for all they lovely stuff they bought for him... Mostly, all the wrong stuff, of course... but I wasn't going to let them keep him. They didn't want to give him back and I thought I was going to have to call the police, but after I promised the kid a baby Veiled, they gave him up!

So far so good. it seems to be working good, but as said i wont leave him there when im not home. I did find a flaw though, hes so fat that he bends branches i put in there for him....he almost escaped into the nearby ficus :p

I had a similar indoor setup for a female Ambilobe. The tree was on a table in the middle of the room to ensure she couldn't reach anything. After 5 days of searching the room and finding her in the most remote places, I decided that she needed a cage. :p

I still don't know how she wondered off. The only thing we can think of was her dropping to the floor each day. I hate to think that she fell 3-4 feet everyday. :/

i like the free range idea....bu i think this is how mine would go down.....hanging lights out of reach my a large anount....a tree or two....alot of vines.....and a glass wall that is like 2 feet tall at the bottom so they cant escape but still have a like a large encloser with very limited boundries.

Danny;
Please be careful. I would not want to see anything happen to any of your guys. I would be afraid for him to be out in the yard with you being out there with him......just too much could happen. Jann

Hey i had a set up i posted of a female jackson that i was keeping in an asian pear tree .i had a large wood and sheet metal box around the bottom and aside from her maybe jumping out of the tree it was escape proof . There she lived happily for about six weeks then on a saturday afternoon i went to the bathroom and as i glance at the window i saw a giant black thing flopping in the tree guess what of all things a TURKEY VULTURE ate my jackson not a cat didn't escape a TURKEY VULTURE i mean come on????????I blame dodolah for this hahaha dodolah made the bird comment and i said yea right.

well i brought him in at about 5:30 to get ready for bed, its only a once in a while thing when im home, he almost never left my sight, the tree is visible through a window in the living room, i appreciate all the warnings and how you all care that he stays safe....and Phil....THAT SUCKS haha.
