Today I noticed that my one female WC lateralis was showing exceptionally soft and beautiful colors. I tried placing her with a male ten days ago and she violently showed him off. Today went much better. :)

The gorgeous color that tipped me off.


What a pattern!


Successful copulation which lasted for twenty-five minutes.


Her colors just astound me. :eek:


The happy couple, post copulation. I will try again over the next few days to make sure it sticks.
 
That really is a drop dead gorgeous girl. people say females aren't pretty - send them a picture of your girl. I love the fern in with her.
 
Those are incredible pictures. I know everyone likes the Minor chameleons female gravid coloration but give me Carpets anytime! Wishing you lots of fertile eggs and baby carpets in the near future! Slainte' Ruth

Thanks! I completely agree. Female lats are just as pretty as female minors. They just lack that "rare" factor.

Speaking of gravid colors. I tried to reintroduce them today. Her colors, while still beautiful, were very different than yesterday and seem to show the first mating took. The male was interested but after seeing her change color he kept his distance.







 
Thanks Frank. She's definitely giving you a show. The asparagus fern is awesome as well. It's growth pattern reminds me of aquatic Taiwan or Christmas tree moss I've used in planted aquaria, which is why I wasn't 100% on it being a fern at first. Good luck with the eggs.
 
Yesterday the female laid 12 healthy beautiful eggs. I noticed her digging in one corner of her enclosure so I moved her to a laying bucket. She showed no interest all day in the bucket and just seemed stressed. I then added an extra amount of soil to the spot in her enclosure where she first started digging and returned her to her enclosure.



That did the trick. The next morning she started digging in the same position. After digging for most of the day she laid 12 nice looking eggs about four inches down in the substrate.



They are being incubated on Repashy Superhatch media.



The much lighter and exhausted mother.



What is interesting about this clutch is that the female mated only sixteen days before laying the eggs. From what I understand a gestation of approximately 30 days is normal for lateralis. After talking to Kevin, it's possible that multiple males may be able to fertilize the same clutch. I would love to hear from others with knowledge of chameleon biology as well to see what they think. Hopefully they are all fertile, they do look like it at first glance. Thanks for looking!

Congrats! The eggs look great. Although gestation usually takes about 30 days on average, I've had them lay in as little as 14 days and commonly around the 20 day mark as well.

Chris Anderson-do you have any information about the eggs being fertilized by more than one father?

Also, it could be that her egg follicles were just further along in development when she was mated. Again, I don't really know myself.

Ha-ain't that the truth. Of course F. minor are beautiful, but I don't see what makes them any more special than lateralis except availability. And F. labordi beats them both I think.

That could be. Thanks for the insight Kevin. I would also like to hear from Chris on the subject. All I can say for sure is that when I bred them I palpated the female and could not feel any eggs. Two weeks later and she looked like twice the girth and eggs were very easily felt.
 
Another Furcifer lateralis mating this week. :D This mating is from a different pair than before. The female is WC and the male is CBB from Kevin. Hoping for fertile eggs in a month and unrelated hatchlings later in the year. Unfortunately they were being shy so these were the best pics I could get.



 
Chams, unlike people, seem to have no desire to be porn stars.:rolleyes: I am hoping for healthy pretty babies.

While at Nick's did you get to see the one remaining baby campani? I would love to see it.

I guess sneaking it out and sending the baby to me was out of the question? Do you think Nick would miss it?:rolleyes:
