General Care & Eye Problem

She is beautiful!! If she were mine I would get her to the vet and have him/her check the eye. In the absence of a vet visit, you could try "Polysporin for Red Eye" which I buy over the counter. It is an antibiotic that is safe for minor eye irritations in chams. I am in Canada so I'm not certain if this product is available in the US, but perhaps Neosporin has something similar?

I would also get some Calcium without D3 and I'd buy a new UVB bulb. They usually only last 6 - 8 months and a yellowing bottom can indicate age.

You have them in separate cages, right? Your little lady looks extremely stressed. If she is developing eggs as you believe, she needs some peace and quiet, food and hydration and less stress. It may even be a good idea (once the eye issue is handled) to put a sheet around her cage lightly to give her a sense of security.

Just a few suggestions to start! Good luck!

Hi Brad, welcome to the forums and congrats on your new additions! The left eye of the female appears to be infected rather than just irritated. She should be on ophthalmic antibiotics to treat it in addition to proper husbandry and nutrition so she needs a reptile vet to take a look at her. Extra vitamin A in her diet for a while may help the immune system fight the infection a little better. Sweet potato, carrots and dark leafy greens are the highest vitamin A foods to use in the gutload.

Without knowing what her calcium supplementation was before it is very important to make sure she is getting a lot of calcium now since she may be gravid (developing eggs). You'll need a calcium without D3 in it so she doesn't get overloaded with D3 since you'll need to dust her crickets every time she's fed to keep up with the calcium demand from egg laying. It's good that she has a laying bin. I leave mine in my female panther's cage at all times, which was of benefit yesterday when she laid eggs when I wasn't expecting her to! She should definitely have her own cage if she doesn't already.

They are in separate cages and I will be adding a visual divider today. I just received my mister last night so I will be installing it today. I'm also taking her to the vet today or tomorrow depending on when I can get on his schedule. I have new heat & 10.0 UV bulbs on their way as well as calcium without D3. I didn't try the shower trick and now since I'm headed to the vet I figure I will reduce stress until we leave. I've also started loading up my roaches & crickets with veggies.

I will keep everything updated on here and post a picture of her eye when she mends!

Sounds like you are on the right track. Keep us posted - she really is a beautiful chameleon and I will be keeping her in my thoughts for a full recovery and healthy life with you! Good luck!

Well she just has a problem with hydration and flow from her tear ducts and it turns out she isn't gravid or at least isn't laying anytime soon. So great news. I have to cleanse her eye 1 or 2 times a day as needed till it comes back to it's former glory. It's also great that she isn't about to lay. That way I can build up her strength and keep stress low.

Update

All is well. Her eye finally opened back up. It would open and close again and again but I'm glad to report she is in great health.

Awesome!!! glad she's all fixed up! :)
