getting new cham

Ok so it doesnt look good for my panther that has been sick and i learned the hard way how to properly care for these guys. I dont think i had enough foliage for him in the begining and that seems like it caused a huge amount of stress and i feel so horrible because i knew it needed more and i ordered stuff from the net and thought he would be fine for a week till i got it and i realized that i was wrong and the first week is detremental in them getting aclimated. He is still alive but falling fast and i am trying everything i can but it looks like hes at the point of no return. Now i am looking into purchasing another cham. I got this one from screameleons and vince has been very helpfull in trying to get him better but as he said once they start going downhill they go fast. I am going into the NYC police department in a few weeks and wont be making that much money so i have a decision to make. here are my options:
-If i am going to get one from a breeder it will be from him cause of all the help he has offered me and their chams are great.
-But if I try to save some money i was wondering if there is anywhere that has cheaper panthers. like lll or some other site like that. I know u get what u pay for.
- or should i go with a good breeder with a different type of cham such as veiled or jackson.
Im leaning towards just sucking it up and going with vince..what u guys think?

and besides their cool colors is there much of a difference in temperment and activity level between the diff species? I know veilds can be nast but are they really that bad? And what about jacksons? not too familiar with them but have heard they are pretty docile. Thanks again

dont make it seem like im not upset about this and i am still showering him everyday and doing my best trying to revive this guy. I am looking now cause today he looks really bad and as vince said its hard for them to come back. I have been on the phone with him everyday trying to get this guy better but its just not working. And i have everything setup perfectly right now and am very interested in keeping these animals and have been researching alot especially on this site. I hace some money right now but when i go into the acedemy i wont have much so its either now or not for a while. So if anyone has any ideas and would like to help me make a decision thank you, and lonomac i do appreciate ur opinion thank you.

Ya was just saying, if your going off and will be tight on money. After that though its really personal preference. Chams are like anything else you buy, you get what you pay for. lllreptile.com sells them cheap, but theres generally negative feedback about the quality. Most breeders on this site I think are just fine if they have what you want.

ok thanks.well im not actually going off to the academy. Its just 8 hours a day job in manhattan. so ill be around. What u think about other chams besides panthers? What do u own? I appreciate ur time.

Ive only owned panthers, currently two. One died not too long ago. There are some nice veilds and jacksons out there, I personally like my panthers though. I like the colors they bring. If you are going to get one, go with a reputable place. Screameleons is good. FLchams has a large variety of chams also.

Have you taken your little guy to the vet yet? They're never gone until they're gone. I personally would try everything in my power to get him looked at by a professional. After all, the attachment is already there, and a vet bill just may be cheaper than another Cham.

thanks..i will def go with scream if i get another panther..as far as the vet i have a good herp vet near me but when talking to vince from scream about it he said the vet prob doesnt know much about chams and all it will do is stress him out more. And he said after seeing pics of the cham and me describing it thats its most likely the stress that was put on it and a vet wont be able to do anything..

Wow-I think you should go to the vet. Owning any pet makes you responsible for their care, and that includes expensive vet visits. It makes me cringe to think people let animals suffer to save money. If you have a good herp vet, why not try? How in the world did it get stressed that bad?

i was on my way to the vet then vince from scream called me to check up and i said he wasnt doing good and i was going to take him to a vet and he told me not to do it cause of the lack of knowledge of chams that most vets have. I bought it from him and he obv knows about chams and i took his word for it and tried everything he told me to. He thinks that he got that stressed because for the first week and a half i had him i didnt have alot in the tank to make him comfortable. And i also didnt have access to the right size crix the first 2 days and he thinks that since i had crix a little too big that made the cham not eat..but once i got him i saw him eat a few crix the i found smaller ones and he ate every once in a while. but vince thinks that since i didnt have the right setup from day one that it caused too much stress on the cham. i think he is right and i trust him on that. .I did have flex vines and one fake plant vine in there but i think he was too exposed to the elements his first week or so. If anyone has any other ideas on y my cham didnt do well i am willing to listen..i got him from scream at the white plains show about 3 weeks ago. do u think

I recently got my 4 ambilobes from vince and they are fine.

I would get a couple real plants in their.
Make sure your not holding the cham for awhile. let him get used to everthing and make sure he's hydrated. Some Chameleons take longer to adjust than others. ALL are different. Give him some time and the proper care and nutrition and he should so just fine.

my vote is for the vet. if you have a good one around you they might know something about them, and its worth a shot. with the way your talking about him is like he has no legs and his eyes are popped out. the vet might make him all better. would a vet visit kill him of stress if he was super stressed already?

From what I hear, Vince raises healthy strong chameleons. Even if he didn't eat much for a week and didn't have tons of plants this isn't adding up. Even with bad lighting and wrong cages it would usually take more than a week. I may be wrong-but I can't imagine anyone telling you NOT to go to a Vet, unless they knew that the particular Vet was a known cham killer.

What specifically is wrong with it?

I too would go to a Vet. I dont understand why you would not. You should do anything and everything to help save your little guys life. Might just be to late now though.

ok well thanks for all the input but im not lying about vince telling me not to go to a vet. I have no reason to lie about this. I got him at the white plains show about 3 sundays ago and that day i bought a zilla cage, reptisun 5.0 light, basking light, and a flexi vine and one fake plant vine. From vince's point of view and i agree with him is that i didnt have enough foliage for him to hid behind in the first couple of weeks. and also the crix i was trying to feed him were a little too big..he did eat some but not many. Then he started turning very white and we thought he was just about to shed and thats y he wasnt eating..then after showing him a picture he said along with others on this forum that he was very dehydrated..so i started showering everyday..he looked better for a day or 2 and started eating then he stopped again and ever since then he has been looking horrible and not eating..i get him to drink a little every day but it doesnt seem like he is gaining strength. One day i put a small mealworm on a leaf about an inch away from him and he had no aim or distance on his tongue. He had to go directly over the worm to snag it..Trust me i am trying everything that a long term breeder(vince) has told me to do ...now any other advice from u guys is a plus..thanks

I do think that you are doing everything that Vince tells you to do.......But maybe next time you sould go to a specialist. Nothing against Vince, but he is a Breeder not a Vet. If your car did not run would you take it to a mechanic, or an autobody man??????????

the reason y i took his word for it is cause he said he has one of the best cham vets right by him and the guy writes books and everything just on chams and he learns from him..the reason y i didnt take him to the vet is cause i know his chams dont have parisites or anything else that can be medically treated..the cham was so young and so scared that a trip to a vet prob would have came back with a scared cham and the same advice vince gave me....trust me if i was given advice saying that a vet could have turned him around i would have paid more than the cham cost..i paid over 4k for my 8 year old rottie to get a tumor taken out of him only to die that night on the bed
