Gonna have to be brave ....

and order some Dubia! Yuk! Dunno If I can handle them, but I'll guess I'll give it a go for my boy! This morning I offered Tommy a mealworm beetle to see what he would do, and he LOVED it! I haven't seen him chew something so heartily for a long time, lol! So, I think I'm gonna be brave and order him and Amy some tasty Dubia for a change! (Bleuurghh!) I might regret this, lol! :D

Oh, don't be brave! Roaches are gross lol. Get a friend to breed them for you, then just take them as you need. That's how I'm gonna do it! I'm so glad my girls will be able to eat them, and that I won't have to have them living in my house. Seriously though, good luck with them. I hear they are super easy to breed.

I just keep hearing my mother tell me to clean up after myself so we don't get roaches in the house.
Plus I can't touch one.
Let us also remember that they bite worse then supers/marios...hehe.

Good luck Tiff. You're more of a man then me.

 They BITE?!?! OMG! Think I might take all that talk of bravery right back and stick it somewhere where the sun don't shine, lol!:D Already been bitten by a locust this week, so that alone has sent me back to using tweezers, lol! Surely they can't be more scuttly, evil or stinky as crix, can they? Perhaps I need to do some more thinking before I take the plunge!

Well you guys aren't exactly filling me with confidence with this, lol!

No, no, they don't bite. I was just being silly.

Don't do it Tiff. Don't give in. Stay strong.
Tommy might only react that way with that beetle and not a roach.
Have you tried any mario beetles? I got 2 that I might try with splat.

Harry

they dont bite at all, dont smell are serrisouly easy to breed..put in a cut up orange and BAM babies(works for me) and plus if they escape they get mawled by my cats and they also cant breed outside the enviorment you keep them in

Ugh! I did try before - I separated a few supers and left them. To my horror the 'alien' things were so huge they made me squirm! I didn't let it emerge as a beetle - that yukky alien thing went straight in the freezer! Way too freaky for me, lol! I honestly didn't expect Tommy to gobble up that beetle, so I thought maybe he would appreciate a bit more variety. The look on his little face, bless! It was so funny! Now I'm not sure whether he was enjoying it or trying to eat it quick as it tasted so bad, lol!:D

Hmmmm! Not quite convinced, lol! I do have a cat that could save me though!

lol obviously the baby making process takes longer, i dont remember exactly how long. on a side note baby dubias(just born) can climb the sides of a tub i have mine in a 45g or 50g(dont remember exactly) rubbermaid tub, but if you take packing tape and put 1 layer around the upper sides just a strip then voila they cant climb packing tape! but larger dubia cant climb the sides

Thanks! Don't think I will breed them though - just wanted to try a few to start with to see if the chams like them. Maybe I'll stick to silkworms and try my hand at breeding them. Silkmoths are so much cuter than roaches!:D

As usual Tiff, it is too bad you aren't closer. I have a colony of about 1,000 give or take a few, I haven't counted them lately. I still use gloves when handling them, but they really are a perfect feeder. I gutload them the same as I do crickets, keep them very warm, and tiny babies appear. Mine are in a large glass aquarium, I do have a screen lid on them but I have never seen one even trying to crawl up the side of the tank.

Just do it cause you love Amy & Tommy, you can do it!!!! I am waiting to hear more.:)

I found Dubia to be perfect insect citizens, much cleaner and better-behaved than crickets - the Dubia cage was like a little insect utopia. Thaxter, however, wasn't convinced, possibly because he never saw one before he was four years old. I'm going to have to try Lloyd on them (and silks, of which Thax was also suspicious) much younger and see if that makes a difference.

I have to agree! Each little paper towel roll is home to a male a few females, and some nymphs, its like a little roach society in there. Not one of my chameleons will turn down a dubia.

I am so lucky that my hubby's not afraid of bugs. :D He takes care of and feeds the roaches. Luie doesn't care for them much. Every now and then I can get him to eat a smaller one. Camille loves anything.

"if they escape" ... good lord!

lol the only way they escape is if they get out of the dusting bag when i shake it up and i think i get them all but sometimes i dont

Aaaaarrrgh not Dubias !! You are very very brave Tiff - i wouldn`t sleep at night with those critters in the house. I`m sure Amy and Tommy will appreciate it greatly though.:D

The worst part's when you first open them, especially if the seller only packs them in a single box and you don't realize it. ><

I had these when i was keeping Mantids, they were great little bugs :D

I couldnt get Peanut to eat them though :( So when the Mantids died out my mini colony (they wouldnt breed for me, i guess too cold) went to my brothers Beardies.

Tiff they will be fine... they arent as 'ewwwww' inducing as crickets, trust me. They are pretty cool really when they reach a larger size. I've never had one escape.
