Great stuff question

Has anyone used great stuff filler on a screen cage?

I ordered the dragonstrand screen cage with the ledges and wanted to use the great stuff to make a more natural wall, but wasn't sure if the screen would allow this.

This is my video.

Your cage looks amazing! This is something I'm wanting to do. I actually contact Bill this morning to upgrade my cage to the clearside. I'm planning on painting the foam with non-toxic paint to make it look more rock like.

Thank you for sharing that!

No problem!

I would really recommend against painting the foam. If anything, you can use some brown or black silicone. Paint will likely dry up and flake off, and can cause problems with your Chameleon. The UV light is very strong and would wreak havoc on paint. Also, if your chameleon care is proper, there will be a LOT of water spraying around in that cage and the paint would wash away. Paints that aren't water soluble usually aren't non toxic. In addition (sorry, I'm ranting), things that are "non toxic" usually mean non toxic to humans. Any paint, even non toxic, would very likely be very toxic to a chameleon.

If it's any consolation, the foam turns from black to green/brown as it is exposed to UV light. It looks like algae building up almost. I think it looks nice, and the foam doesn't look bad to begin with.

As for cleaning it rinses off easily but the nooks and cranies can be tough to get into.
When you are woking with it and it's wet and it gets on something it stays. That clean up is hard.

I used black silicon on top of the great stuff, and then topped that with coco fibers for a more naturalistic look. When the great stuff hardens you can sand it down to smooth out the nooks and crannies. My husband used a Dremel with a sanding tip on it, and took it outside of the garage where he was doing everything else because that dust gets EVERYWHERE! Here's a pic of the Dragonstrand next to the old cage, before the plants and climbing vines went in.

this looks awesome and I'm interested in doing something like this. What did you use to get the coco fiber to stick?

I would Not recommend cocos fiber because if ur chameleon shoots such a fiber when hunting those can cause pretty bad inner injurys .

I build this with just styrofoam, tile glue and epoxide resin Maybe u like it . Was 4 days of work and I would say it has a nice look to it

We stuck it to the black silicone that was put on top of the great stuff. We only used the smooth (finely ground) coco fiber, so there won't be anything for Sunny to shoot. When I'm not so lazy and feeling up for a challenge I'm going to put together a step by step photo blog on how to do it, with tips and tricks. Tonight, however, is not that night. :p

Just another point of view, you may want to consider a "floating" wall. Once you spray the Great Stuff onto a screen, it's not ever coming out. Not easily anyways. You may wind up damaging the cage and cleaning will be a PIA. I used great stuff in my terrarium, but made a frame to support it, so it's basically a picture hanging in my enclosure. My last cleaning I was very glad that the wall came out liek it dis and I was able to wash it outside and clean the terrarium properly.

Here is a thread I did outlining my process.
