I have a male panther chameleon with a respiritory infection and am taking him to the vet tomorrow, over the phone they said that if I was right and it is a respiritory infection(which I know it is I have had a cham with it before) it would need baytril. I have heard baytril is a very strong anti-biotic and I want to know how much should be used as I dont know if the vet has very much experience with chameleons specifically, if anyone has any info let me know anything will help, thanks

when my cham, lost his tounge he was perscribed baytril and it was .02cc orally a day.
he was about about 6 m old and approx 70g.
your vet should be able to do a simple calculation to get the dosage.

ok so the vets calculations should be based on size and age? I am just worried because I have heard horror stories of vets that dont actually know what they are doing with reptiles and there animal ends up dieing

i belive it is based mostly on weight, and the type of infection it is being used to treat, but thats just my hunch. i would definatly see the vet and if you have any doubt as to their advise post about it and there are afew members with advanced knowledge of medicine that could help

Years ago when I worked for a vet, we had baytril. It's a safe drug for animals if used at the right dosings. I wouldn't think twice for my animals using it if needed. Just make sure he is reputable vet that has experience with reptiles.

I suggest calling a few vets that specialize with reptiles and confirm dosings prior to administrating them.

Can't give you the dosage...depends on the strength/dilution of it and then the weight of the chameleon too.

Its been used many times on my chameleons over the last 20 years. Just make sure that the chameleon gets plenty of water while on it.

I've used baytril in the past.
It has a pretty wide safety margin. Recommended dose has a range that actually doubles from min to max.

ok one other question I had I forgot to mention what have you guys used as a probiotic after the cycle with baytril?

look up bene bac, it has live culture and I believe there is a formula for reptiles. I have used it previously, but not for a cham. ask the vet about it as well, please.

Maybe Lynda can tell you about it if she has used it

You also want to hydrate well when using Baytril I always gave twice as much water as baytril while I had the mouth open. Also I switched my morning misting form 5 min to 25 min.

I had a panther with a pretty severe respiratory infection Got some Reptaid over nighted to me and he was dramatically better after 5 days.

Sarah, I didnt think of the reptaid,
I have to be careful with it when dosing Krash, it doesnt sit too well with him,
does reptaid have any probiotic properties in it?

reptaid has been a cure all for me with everything but for some reason it doesnt help this cham...... I have done a full reptaid cycle with him and it reduced his mucus build up to close to nothing and now just 2 days after the end of the reptaid cycle hes getting bad again

ReptileMan, I can get you something far better than Baytril...My vet set me up w/ Amtyl - Amoxicillin & Tylan, Broad Spectrum "Powerful Antibiotic"

This product should "only be used with sick reptiles or birds". It is not meant to be used as a preventative medication.

Amtyl is a powerful broad spectrum antibiotic to help heal a wide range of illnesses common in reptiles and birds.

The number one choice to treat respiratory problems. A combination of "Amoxicillin" Trihydrate and "Tylan" Tylosin Tartrate are combined to produce a highly effective and safe antibiotic to treat a wide range of bacterial infections and respiratory problems. It has been the best by far for me and my chameleons. My vet swears by it and I have a large supply.

i have used baytril in the past but not for a cham, for my ball python. i was given pre filled syringes to administer. didnt have a problem with it (aside from calming the snake to give the injection) but like others said keep your cham well hydrated during the process. vet did mention that when he prescribed the baytril
