Feeding ANYTHING that society considers a pet will always be controversial. And being resourceful, especially in an instance of death of an object that is cared for. Most would not consider crickets a pet, thought I die alittle each time I see one crawl up and get CHOMPED on, I can even notice their antennas moving and slowly stop. Truth is you have to be really hardened to feed one pet to another. I know I couldn't do it, though I would be out of my place if I were to tell another that they are wrong for doing so.

Thats exactly it Kongchi I think thats why I just couldnt do something like that.
I was trying to put it in words in my head as to WHY it was but you seriously
hit the nail on the head LOL!

Because in my mind i consider snakes/baby chameleons/anoles/ what ever else as my mind procieves as a pet.
and so in my mind feeding one pet to another is just wrong
and I personally couldnt stomache it, no matter how nutritional, I would never be able to do that :/

What species of snakes are you having a problem jumpstarting to feed? I know a few 'tricks' that might work, depending on the species of snake.

I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you don't over do it. I live in Florida and occasionally toss in a wild cought lizard for my chams. I only feed them the none native invasive ones. The chams really love them and it's fun to watch.

Im sure you are aware this is almost asking to for parasites, and take measures to mitigate.

It's just kind of odd to me that they refuse to eat even though their survival absolutely depended on it!

A percentage just aren't meant to make it. There are a couple in almost every clutch.

Thanks, but I've been at this for almost 20 years. I know I can deli cup, brain, scent, assist-feed, car-ride, etc., etc. But these animals don't belong in the gene pool. Most are hognoses, tri-color milks, and corns. Nothing there is a great cb shortage of. I am not interested in babying them, no pun intended. I have a few with a kinked spine, a couple with one eye, and several showing no interest in food. They aren't going to be nursed along to become someone elses problem. So far one corn fed to a veiled and one milk to a paradalis. I'll say this, they wasted no time! The panther even raced to the floor to get his brightly colored treat.

Cool- I didn't know if it was bothering you couldn't get them to eat, if you've been at it that long, I guess it's safe to say you know what you're doing. I did the Colubrid snake thing for 10 years, but nowadays if it doesn't eat insects, I don't wanna fool with it. I never had a stubborn hatchling that wouldn't pounce on a pinkie scented with a frozen segment of bloody Anole tail.

True. I originally got my Hissers and stick bugs as pets. The first time I used one as prey for a chameleon I gave myself unpleasant shivers. But I got over that. I still keep some of these as pets - but they are in a different enclosure than the feeder colonies, and get their own names. I loved my pet Guinea Pigs, but I also know they are quite tasty. Impalla are beautiful, but also tasty. Silkworms are soft and cute, and the moths can be quite pretty (I think) yet they too are tasty.

But I cant eat Pig/ pork anymore (not for over 20 years) after learning what intelligent and wonderful pets/animals they are.

Everyones right/wrong line is in a different place.
For me, the line is some perceived intelligence value.

Possibly the PETA people have the moral high ground, but most of us are going to fall a lot closer to "survival circle of life eat or be eaten"

Good points, Sandra! Culling is not "fun," and I don't enjoy it more than anyone here would. It is our responsibility though, if we choose to breed herps.

As for eating pork, I dare anyone to spend time around a tamed pig and not have an issue with raising them for slaughter! You don't have a heart if you can't connect with a pig raised around humans. They actually smile, and the facial expressions at stimuli have to be seen in person to be believed.
