Heat mat?

I was told he needed a heat pad by the same store that said he needed a peat moss floor, he's a Jackson's, is it needed, recommended, or was the store just shelling out BS?

Total BS - chameleons are arboreal (tree dwelling) and only go to the ground to lay eggs. They don't bask on rocks like ground dwelling species do, they bask from the sun so they need overhead sources of heat in the form of a basking light. Also they don't need peat moss on the floor because it's only going to harbor mold and bacteria and your cham could ingest it when he's hunting for the crickets that will hide in it. So bare bottom cage and overhead heat sources. :)

...what else did they tell you?

what the store told me

well, they told me that I need to buy their 30 dollar UVB specific bulbs and full daylight lightbulbs I get at other stores don't work...and also that their crickets are the best (it was a mall pet store, I saved my little guy because the idiots used to allow the kids to handle their Jacksons sometimes, they only stopped after 2 died and didn't stop till the day after...) I noticed half the stuff was shelled bull-shit, such as, "Our crickets are best, I would recommend you not buy anywhere else" yes, that was literally a quote

I was just trying to find out what was BS and what wasn't, they also said 3 crickets a day, powdered with calcium supplement, and do not keep a water bowl, just mist the cage at least 3 times a day (that I was already told was a good idea on here), so that's the only true statement they had... oh, I get 10 crickets every 3 days and just allow him to hunt them himself, bad idea? (Not talking about money-wise, just the habits)

How old is the chameleon? what else are you feeding it? (variety is important) what do you feed the crickets and other feeders?
If adult you can feed it every third day, But I believe it is better to feed smaller amounts daily or every other day, rather than every third day.
Also, Jacksons do NOT need as much supplementation as a panther or veiled.

in my experience petstores just tell you to buy things like that because they seem like they might make sence to a novice but they are just trying to get as much money as possible. just like every petstore i went to with my lil brothers friend said to buy a uva-uvb bulb and fixture for his lepord gecko (which are nocturnal) along with an assortment of other things not remotley needed for that lizard. enough said.

Hi my name is Jim thank you for coming to Petsmart today, and Did you know that Chameleons store thier tongues in thier tails when theyre not using them?

in all seriousness i once came home and my mother had been told and convinced that in order to keep a single goldfish she would need at least a ten gallon with all of the accesories. she spent 100 bucks on a goldfish that would have just as well stayed in a stagnant toilet bowl

BS, unless you're trying to cook him. They try to sell you everything "reptile related", and if it ends up killing your animal they take no responsibility. Many people learn the hard way -- it's a good thing that you came here to ask and learn :)
