Heating Concern

Hello I'm not completely new to keeping chameleons however it was a long time ago and I saw a beautiful male veiled at the local pet store that sparked my interest again, however I do have some concern with the set up I currently have. I have the reptibreeze 4x2 enclosure adorned with right now a large schefflera (pothos and a ficus in the future weather permitting) but I can't get the temperature up to the desired range. I have a 150 watt red light in a dome fixture but the basking temp is 86 while the ambient temp is 72. Anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps it because it's a red bulb? I also have a uvb fixture as well.

Those temps would be ok. What kind of temp are you looking for? I would change out the red for white. The white replicates the sun better for basking purposes.

yes. how old is the chameleon? Most people try to keep their ambient temps in the low to mid 70's for veilds, regardless of age. The basking for babies in the low 80's and the basking for adults can be in the area of 90. So your basking could go a little higher but you don't need to heat up the whole cage so much.

Then mid 70's or so for your ambient and your basking temp around 90. You should be good with that. Try the white light and see if that does not bring up the temp. I don't know if that will make a difference or not. I have never used red bulbs.

what's the purpose of the Red Bulb? I would just go with a straight daylight spectrum incandescent. You should be able to get your temps where you need them. I keep a few from 40 - 150 watt and swap them out as needed depending on the weather etc, if the ambient room temperature varies. They produce all the heat you need and are much cheaper. The Red Bulb is oddly colored and not natural, I would be concerned about my chams eyes with that bulb.
