Hello from London, England.

Hi guys, I'm going to buy my first Chameleon and a Bearded Dragon next week friday. I have a Corn Snake and a Dog at the moment but want to broaden my reptile collection. I have always had an interest in Chameleons but never thought I could actually buy one until 2 days ago when I walked into my local pet store and they had a baby yemen that had just come in.

Can't wait!

Welcome aboard!

Please make sure to have the proper enclosure and setup before getting a chameleon. They are among the hardest reptiles to keep and can be pretty vulnerable. Also, you don't want to buy things that sellers from petstore will tell you they are Ok when in fact they aren't made for chameleons! ;)

If you have any questions, you are at the right place! :)

Yeah, i'll definately be doing my research before I go and get it. There is a lot of useful information on this forum, I'm glad i found it. Thanks for the info, i'll definately be reading through those.

There is one question though, Is a Yemen the same as a Veiled Chameleon? That's the one i'll be picking up.

Hiya, whereabouts in London are you? I'm getting a young pair of panther chameleons in two days time :) I am just outside London in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, the guy I brought them through has two stunning males also and is in abbots Langley, Hertfordshire
Regards
Paul

Hi Paul

Nick here, I'm in Camden. Sorry for delay in replying, it's been a busy week.

Have you got chams yet? I got my (what turned out to be) female in April and the boy last month. He's an aggressive little sod, whereas she happily walks on my hand now. I'm assuming when you say a pair you mean male and female? I'm inexperienced so can't tell at this young age, and ass I said I bought the female as a male and then got cheated out of the comparable refund (avoid Lost World Reptiles in Sittingbourne, though I've found Croydon Reptiles most helpful.

Hi Mick, yes I have a boy and a girl, only a couple of months old and she is bigger than him but he is visibly Intimidating her now when he passes her so the next couple of days will be spent setting up a new viv for him, the plan is to breed them next year and hopefully recover my costs at least, I only wanted a boy but ended up with one of each as the breeders have worked out they always end up with females left over so sell ad pairs now.
so it's double the food, another £350 on a second viv etc. etc. I'm putting some electronics in and misters/fans to maintain the humidity so I can go out of the house for more than a couple of hours at a time! I didn't realise that would be quote as intensive to take care of and have no idea how people spray manually for several years 4 times a day

Ha yes indeed. But text me 07788414333 I've set up a slightly less costly and more fluidic volume humidifier that means you can actual leave the house for a couple of days

Ahh, the offer is much appreciated but ive already got myself a mister system i will be setting up tomorrow, are you using a timer or humidstat to operate yours?

Timer on every other hour from 8am to 9am, then 10-11, etc to 7pm, seems to work well

Cool, I got the evo pro which does temp and humidity and a super rain 2 system which should be capable.of doing several viv's, hope to set it all up over the weekend and get him moved into his new home then spend a few days tuning the setups as her viv is slightly smaller than his

Oh ok sounds complicated and expensive. But should make for happy chameleons. The idea of making your money back is tempting and I'm hoping the same but waiting til they're old enough, plus the couple of months for gestation of the eggs inside the chameleon then 9-12 months of waiting for the eggs to hatch. It's not a get rich quick scheme :). But I'm looking forward to having hatchlings. They are cute beyond words. I used to breed corn snakes. Snappy little gits straight outta the eggs.

It's wasn't cheap but I guess the more stable and optimal the conditions are for them the better the chances of reproduction are, I like a challenge and breeding panthers seems like a good one, wouldn't mind getting a few more females and starting a little breeding programme off in the very distant future but that'll be a good few years away from now

I'm in a one bedroom flat so don't really have the space

A 1 bed flat in Camden, you could always sell.it and buy a small mansion somewhere! I haven't been there for years now(since I got old) :)

If only it were mine, sadly at the tender age of 48, life events and dodgy health conspired against me for getting on the property ladder. So it's just me and the chams, Freya and Alfie (aka Lucifer) and Bathsheba my female royal Python. I'm also an indoor/balcony gardener, hence my place having been called Kewrassis Park.

Ahh, health problems do tend to get in the way, I can sympathise with that, my friend grew up in Camden and is now a BBC dj, he did a rap video about Camden, check out" a guided tour of Camden" by Charlie Sloth on YouTube, he's a funny guy
