We'll...I'd like to say hello to everyone. I'm new to these forums...and new to having a strong interest in Chameleons. I'm really looking forward to having one as a friend (aka..owning one). Right now...I'm in the learning/reading/buy equipment stage. It will be a few months before I actualy buy one. I cant wait....but I must be prepared.

My question is this...should I get as large a cage (indoors) that I can upfront..or should I get a small cage? I'm going to try to get a 6 month old panther.

Is a large cage for a small Chameleon a bad thing??

btw...my dauther just got a job at an exotic pet store. She's the one that has gotten me into chams. Best part...I can get one super cheap with her discount...I'll only have to pay 30% of what they normally cost. Its a great first job for her...and for me. :D

Anyway....thanks for any advice.

Will you buy a male or female? Males of any species tend to roam more than girls, so a bigger cage might be good. At 6 months its no longer a baby and approaching adulthood.
A 4x(high) x 2 x2 might be good size.
Type of caging will depend on your climate but ventilation/drainage are major points to consider.
:)

P.S. Welcome Josh! :)

thanks for the reply. I'm going to try to get a male.

I like the 24x24x48 large cage here:

:)

When I got Sancho he was 3 months old. I put him in a 18x18x36 (tons of vines and plants) then when he was 4 1/2 months old I put him in a 24x24x48 with even more plants and vines. He loved it never had a problem with it. Just make sure you put tons of vines and live plants the bigger the better just in case.

Ok, another question. If its a smaller cham...can the large cage make it harder for him to get to its food?

The only problem I've ever heard of when putting a small cham in a large cage is that they are still much weaker and if they fall, it's a long fall which could injure them pretty badly.

Buy a large cage and put a divider in it until he's ready for the full size. And yes large cages makes it difficult for small chameleons to find food.
