HELP!!! Eye problem with Simba!!!

In regards to what the guy at the shop said.
He is correct, you cant always trust the internet.
Just keep in mind, that this particular corner of the internet, is in it for the love of the animal, while shops(even if they care) are in it for profit.
Any enclosure that keeps the cham safely contained, allows the UVB light in, and has suffecient air flow will work.
IMO, shops keep chams in terrariums(even here in the states) because they "look" more "appealing" to customers, and they are convienient for the shop, because they can put a wide variety of animals in them, thus cutting costs. While you can only keep a limited number of animals in a screened enclosure.
It does not sound like they are taking very good care of their animals at all IMO.
Your chameleon is not smaller because of his enclosure, and it effecting his metabolism.
You can use the shefflera. Its fine, and my panthers favorite plant.
You should only use the multivitamin, and D3 twice a month maybe. I dont think thats causing his issue.
I know its hard having him under the weather, but try to relax.
When you cleaned, did you use any chemicals?

Thanks for the feedback. Missed this post earlier.
I think I'm just going to stick with the yucca plants now (sterilised). Yucca deffo on the safe plant list, plus I don't think I''ll be able to fit another plant in ther now!! LOL
It'll come in handy for when I need to take him out though...he can just chill in that while I'm busy with his enclosure.

I'll cut his d3 down to once every 2 weeks then x

Sounds good. Most people seem to do plain calcium mon-sat,
then alternate the D3 and multi every sun.

i had the same problem

i had the same problem with my female veiled it looks like there eyes have headphones built in it was my vines the same vines you have in your inclosure little particles were getting in her eye i smitched to vines that are kinda foam like not gritty feeling and have not had a problem i used a antibiotic ointment from the vet to help clear the eye and pull out what was stuck try the vine change

tinkerbell is the one that had the problem and three months after the vine change she laid 66 perfect eggs and has not had any problems of any kind sincehope i helped

Vines?!?!? Really??

I think the antibiotics/steroid eye drops might be worth getting from the vet anyway just to get rid of any infection/foreign bodies that could be in there. Not looking forward to putting them in though. He's going to hate me forever!! I'm going to try and get him another appointment tomorrow as his eyes were still swollen this morning and he is still missing his feeders when he shoots at them.

But the vines have been in there the whole time I have had him and only just having problems now??? Last night I SCRUBBED the whole setup with sterilised water (with the tablets in you use to sterilize babies bottles) as well as his mister bottle and dripper and all the equipment that I use for him.(As per advice from the reptile vet)
Still, I'm so worried I'm trying everything so I'm going to try and find somewhere that does some alternatives to the vines I have at the moment.

Poor little man doesn't know what the hell is going on!!

I'll post the pics I've taken, tonight (swollen eyes and the pics I got of him sitting on me when he was out last night :))

I just want him to get better!!

Pets at Home sell the rubberised vines (I think they are the Lucky Reptile ones) - I got them for the cresties as I had to wash everything nightly. The knobbly Exo Terra ones fall to bits if you wash them too much! Plus the rubbery ones can just be towel dried after washing which makes life so much easier! I will see if I can find some links - are you able to purchase things online?

That's brill thanks for that Tiff.

I'll change the vines ASAP!!!

Can't wait to get home to see how he's doing and post pics for you all.

Those rubbery vines aren't cheap, but they are brilliant! Mine have been bleached and washed nightly for a couple of months and are still as good as new! I bought another for Amy's viv and I also have one for Monty when he's big enough! I found one in my local P@H for £6 as it was discontinued.

I'm convinced they've got something to do with it now. I don't mind Tiff, if they fix him I'll pay the money!!

Eyes still swollen when I got home :(

Gave him a mist and they looked like balloons!!! THEN I noticed some dark bits on his skin...specks of the stuff thats on the vines!!! Makes sense if they are getting in his eyes!!! I could bloody kick myself! In fact I think I will!!
I'd never have though it could be the vines!!! So thanks Linz!!!

I'm going to change the vines straight away and take him back to the vets tomorrow for some antibiotic drops.

Here's the pics I took yesterday and tonight:

you can really see the specks of vine 'bits' in this one! I tried 'spraying them off' but they wouldn't move so hopefully vet can remove any left on him tomorrow.

I hope new vines and antibiotics does the trick!!

Will keep you all informed x

Have just ordered 3 new vines from the first link, thanks Tiff!!! x

Will take the exo terra vines out when I take Simba out to go to the vets tomorrow.

Hopefully the new ones will be here tomorrow, but might be Tues so he might have to just have some sticks until the vines come.

Thanks again Tiff for the link x

Those Exo ones are a pita! They make such a mess just bending them into shape! I think the rubbery ones are worth the money just for the fact that they don't drop bits everywhere! Have you seen him rubbing his eyes on the vines? I suppose he would do when shedding. They can rub them really hard too - makes me cringe sometimes!

Poor Simba, it looks awful! Amy's eyes did that overnight on a couple of nights a while ago. She looked like a hammerhead shark, but the swelling disappeared during the day and they haven't done it since.

my male veiled does this from time to time but as soon as i walk in the room and make myself present to him he just puts em back to normal, weird....

My male veiled did this from time to time aswell but i would just give him a long misting with warm water so he could clean the ey and he would go back to normal. I would change the D3 schedule and get a calcium with D3 supplement and a seperate multivitamin supplement. Each to be used twice a month.

Thanks, but misting seems to make it worse :(
Thanks for the tip on the supplements. As u are in the uk can u reccomend any brands for both?

Cheers

I use all the zoomed supplements. You could try repashy calcium plus. This is an all in one supplement to use on every feed with the correct levels of everything!

I've just been looking at those

I use the repashy chameleon calcium plus already but it contains d3 so I only use that once a week and Komodo calcium only cricket dust on evey other feed

Will now only use it once every 2weeks

Would that give him everything he needs?

Latest with Simba.

Took him to the vets again tonight. Again his balloon eyes disappeared but he still had the baggy skin all around them

Have been given antibitoic/steroid drops to put in 3 times a day (Oh he'll be pleased with that!!)

Have taken out the exo terra vines and he has a couple of temporary willow branches until his new Lucky Reptile rubber vines get here tomorrow. :)

I hope he copes with all this stress!!! :(

Will keep you posted on his progress x

Eyes not swollen this morning, just a bit baggy :)
Managed with eye drops although I doubt it'll be his favourite activity as I have to pick him up so they don't go in his mouth.

Hope all this stress is worth it and he gets better soon.
